using DVD shrink & nero OEM suite which came with the burner (ver. 6, 0, 0, 16) and just updated BTC writer's firmware

hi, first post here and i found one thread on a different model BTC burner than mine so maybe someone can help me out with my particular model. it's a DVD+-R/RW writer 8x.

i came across some threads mentioning these horrible CMG media discs or something like that but i cannot recall which brand discs i have as i threw away all the packaging long ago. i got them from fry's a while back and they have no brand label on the top. the media side is purple and the top is clear/silver/blank.

now i have burned maybe 50 DVD+R's or so without any problems 'til now. i'm noticing the same 'eraser mark' on every burned DVD+R in the same location (have not tried other media or DVD-R or this DVD-ROM booktype i read about here; must look into that) and the movie is only viewable until about the last couple of chapters when it starts to skip and glitch. this is happening on every DVD+R burn but earlier burns seem to play just fine and no 'eraser mark'(the bad ones look like somebody took a pencil eraser to one 1/8" x 1/8" spot towards to outer edge of the media side. so, i guess i have a lot of these 'coasters' now and i'm trying to find out if it's my burner or my media. i don't understand why they are crapping out on me after about 50 no prob burns?

this drive burns CD-R's and data DVD's just fine on the same media in question.

any ideas on what could be going wrong or suggestions on a new media brand to try?

the only other complaint i have with the burner is it seemed to take about 4 hours from start to finish to burn a single DVD+R using DVD shrink & nero even at 8x i think. i've tried both 4x and 8x and i'm still getting coasters and long burn time.

i will have to look into that subtitle forum as well as i've encountered problems not getting suby's to show up on playback on my stand alone player on such films as lone wolf and cub, triplets of belleville and city of god. but i realize this is for another day.

hopefully someone can help me out as i'd like to capitalize on those black friday sales if i get the right info in time.

thanks a lot and have a great turkey day.

Update your Nero it's way out of date. Latest is 6.6.0.18
http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php

Get DVD Identifer and see what disks you are using. Then post it here.
http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Check and make sure your DVD drive is still in DMA mode and not in PIO mode. Do this to see.

Click start/control panel/System icon/Hardware Tab/Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controler

Then right click on each IDE channel and click properties then click the Advanced setting Tab and there you should be able to change the DMA and PIO Mode settings. Make sure it is in DMA mode.

If it is in PIO mode and wont let you change it to DMA mode then delete your DVD drive and restart and windows should reset it to DMA mode.

Go here for setting DMA:

P.S. Check this out so you can pick quality media.

2oldgeek is right...... but here are some usefull pages to get yourself familar with:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/183136

check out #12 it will tell you about booktyping your drive when using DVD+R media.

The problem you are having is definately a media problem...... and if you use DVDIdentifier you can find out your manufacturer's ID .... then look on the list in the Media Guide that 2oldGeek gave you the link to. CMC MAG is the worst (Memorex!) stay away from those. Use Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Maxell to name a few great brands that won't give your drive any problems with and will burn nicely. Also only burn disks at 4X, don't burn too close to the edge (4300KB if you can set your program that shrinks the movie to) and don't put paper labels on your disk (could cause problems viewing!). Chekc out the guides in Scubba Pete's page or BBMayo's Page in the link above..... read and follow their suggestions and you too can become a DVD burning fool! LIKE ME! HAHAHAHA

ok so i have some screenshots of what happened:

looks like i have 4th class media according to digitalfaq! OPTODISC = Optodisc (Taiwan) = (+R)(+RW)

with win 98 i was not getting the same options as the ones in the guide which you supplied. i was unable to get the digital IDE channel properties screen and determine whether or not the drive is in DMA transfer mode.

however, here are some screenshots of what happens when i click the DVD drive itself:

^i get that error message after i click DMA transfer mode for the DVD drive. i clicked 'no' and haven't shutdown yet. i'm hoping someone can shed some light on this log and let me know if i should keep it checked and reboot. any tips?

thanks.
