Hi, I'm new to this site and plan on using it often, now that I've found it.

Anyway, I'm planning on backing up some PS2 games, and I'd like to know how to do that. I'd also like to know if I need a mod chip in my PS2 or some other sort of program or whatever. Thank you in advance for any help.

To play back-up games, you'll need a mod chip or a swap magic.

Backing them up (PS2 games) is easy. If you get a chip it's even easier. With a chip, all you have to do is straight up copy the disc.

If you're using swap magic, you'll (usually) have to rebuild the game. Not as hard as it sounds, there's a thread at the top of this forum that will explain how to do it.

yes, there are 2 methods
1. a good modchip (DMS4 or Matrix Infinity)
these are a little more expensive ways to go but by far the best

2. Swap Magic and aftermarket flip top (slim & chunky)
2a. Swap Magic and slimtool/magic switch (slim)
2b. Swap Magic and slidecard (chunky) the worst but cheapest method.

DVD Decrypter you can get here in the software section will
do a good job backing up games
As stated there are some games when using Swap Magic that need
to be rebuilt, but i would say only about 5-8% of them.
If you have Nero Burning Rom (part of Nero Suite) it is real easy
If not it is a bit more involved

some side notes for you:
1. Swap Magic can not play dual layer back ups (DVD9), a good chip will
2. Swap Magic is a pain to use with cheat discs on your back ups, a chip it is no different then without a chip.
3. Swap Magic usually will have a slight bit of screen cut off if
you are playing games from different regions like a PAL game on an NTSC PSTwo, chip has no problems there either
4. Chips have support for hard drives, Not sure how you do it without a chip for your back ups.
5. Mod chips may have a few games that you need to disable the chip to play online. Swap Magic should be no problem. So if you have a chip getting Swap Magic to may be needed because the back up will not load with the chip off. I have heard that the Socom3 is the only one that the chip needs to be off for, but can not confirm that as
i do not play online.

hope all this helps a bit.
