Alright,

I used to burn dvds and not have problems but i went to Europe for a year and now i am back trying to burn dvds again. But i am having some issues with it. Here are the things that i have been using to rip and burn my dvds.
I am using to rip the dvds:
- Smartripper
- DVD Decrypter
- DVD2One V2
- DVD Shrink 3.2
I use the DVD Decrypter for the smaller dvds such as DVD-5 and the rest i have been using Smartripper and then converting with DVD2One.

I have been burning with Nero and DVD2One on the dvd burner.
- Memorex DVD+RW/+R it is one of the first burners and it only has a burn rate of 4x.

So here is my problem...

Everything goes well from the ripping to the converting and once i begin to burn the DVD on the Memorex it shows an error whether it is at the beginning of the burn or at the end when it is trying to close the dvd. I do not know if i am not ripping the right items or if i should be upgrading my burner.

If anyone could help me that would be great...Thanks...

I suspect the firmware on your drive is very old and may have trouble with some of the newer media. I have the same burner and still use it from time to time but it does have trouble with newer media. That said, you need to make sure you're using quality media like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or the Made in Japan labeled Fuji, Sony, and Maxell brands. New NEC 3540/3550 and BenQ 1640 burners are $40 online and worth the money especially if you are interested in DL burning. Just be sure to update your firmware.

Memorex firmware is at the site below if you want to see if any is newer than what you have.

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=20

You also need to make sure your programs are up to date. I use DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and AnyDVD. Nothing else is really necessary 99% of the time.

For some reason, it still does not burn all the way through...Is there anything that i am missing as in something that i should also be ripping or not ripping so that the movie transfers onto the DVD+R. I could really use the help as nothing that i have tried has been working for me. Thanks

If you are using Nero to burn with then you should post your Nero burn log.

Generally when a burn fails well into the burn it is usually a media problem. If the burn fails during the finalizing of the disc then that's a good indication of your blank having defects near the edge.

Usually there is an error message associated with a failure. Did you get one?

Boogie, what brand and type of media are you using? A lot of it is pure crap nowadays. Memorex is among the worst media sometimes depending upon which manufacturer's they choose to rebrand. Download DVD Identifier from the site in my signature below and get the media ID for the media you're using. Your solution could be to just switch media if what you're using is faulty or poorly manufactured. I know you were gone only a year but that is a couple generations' time in burner years.

Laddyboy thanks with all the help. Alright, what kind of media should i be thinkning about purchasing so that i can have quality burns. The media that i have been using is Sony DVD+R and i have been trying to use up the rest of my DVD+R Memorex DVDs. Also, do you think that since it has been a year that i should be upgrading my Burner to a faster burner or do you think that i am fine with the:
Memorex DVD+R/+RW 2.4x8AA [FW 1.72]...

The Sony disks come back and are good while the memorex disks say:
DVD+R:RICOHJPN-R01-002

Anything will help as you can see i am a little lost and i can not believe it was only a year. Thanks so much for all your help as well.

Boogie, post the last section of your Nero log after deleting your name and program serial number. Each section begins with your name and serial number. The log is located in the path Program Files -> Ahead -> Nero -> NeroHistory. This should give us a lot of needed information.

Your media is good so we need to see what's going on during the burn, hence the need to see the log.

I would start saving for a new burner since DL media has really been falling in price as of late. You'll have fewer headaches also. But let's see if we can get the old Memorex burner working correctly again.

Boogie:

Nero is actually up to 6.6.0.18 but I don't think that's causing any problem.

Is your Memorex burner mounted in an external enclosure? Nero is picking up a bunch of USB drivers. Nero is not picking up the comm interface for the Memorex. Is it on the same bus as the Teac CDROM? That controller is in PIO mode rather than DMA. If it's on the same bus, that could be the problem.

The burner is not identifying the specific media, which is not a good thing. It is not necessarily fatal but usually causes problems.

Post back re the questions above.

Yes my memorex is posted in an exteral drive and i do not know why it would be picking up more than one external harddrive...I do not believe that it is posted in the same bus as the Tec drive but the computer could be thinking that it is for some reason, cause now i am trying to burn the dvds with DVD Decrypter and it is having problems as well. If you could help me out that would be such a great help and thank you so much...

The Sony media is rated at 8X and yet your burner's firmware allows 2X and 2.4X. Are you sure your burner writes at 4X? It identifies as 2.4X which would explain the speeds allowed. I don't think your burner knows what to do with this newer media although I can't say for sure that is what's causing the problem. Is your burner connected to a USB2 port or a USB1 port? External enclosures problems in communicating with the comm chip on the laptop motherboard can also cause these types of problems as well. Changing external enclosures sometimes solves the problem. You might try to find some older 4X or slower media and try that. Also if you're using DVD Shrink or Nero Recode (or any other program) be sure to set the target size to no more than 4350 to keep from writing to the edge of the disk where the dye usually thins and disk recording quality suffers.

If I were you, I think I would simply upgrade to a new burner. Maybe even a new external enclosure while you're at it. I would choose an NEC (3540/3550) or BenQ 1640 myself. For external enclosures, I prefer Plumax with the Prolific chipset although I've used Bytecc enclosures as well.

That would sound about right seeing how i do have an older system and it is just been used too much and fading fast. I was wondering where would be a good place to purchase the new external driver? Also, those are the ones that you would choose so i think that i am going to go with those ones unless there are any others that you think would be better. Thanks again for all your help.

To answer your questions:
No, you are correct. My dvd burner only has a burn rate of 2.4x. I am using the USB1 Port for my communications with my labtop. I am kind of confused with what you are talking about changing up my external enclosers. Are you talking about changing up my burner?

Boogie, quite honestly, using the USB1 port for burning is never going to deliver very satisfying results because the bandwidth is just too narrow. USB2 or Firewire works great though for laptops. Buying a new burner won't help too much with such limited throughput. No matter what speed you choose for burning, you'll only get around 1X speed.

What I meant by an external enclosure is that instead of buying a prepackaged external burner, just buy an internal burner and place it in a USB2 or Firewire external enclosure. Sometimes it's cheaper than buying a prepackaged external burner. You just have to shop around for the best deal for an acceptable brand.

If you want to stick with what you have for the time being, if you have a PCMCIA slot, buy a USB2 PCMCIA card (mine cost $15US) and hook your burner to that port. I have done this with an older laptop lacking USB2 ports and it worked great for me.

I wouldn't buy a laptop with a DVD burner already installed internally because most laptop burners are crap. Save the money and just buy a laptop (if that's your platform of choice) without the DVD burner (DVD drive/CD burner is OK) and add the external DVD burner yourself. That way you'll get a quality burner. I also wouldn't buy a desktop system with a DVD burner unless I knew it was an NEC or BenQ. I'd add that myself.

Sounds good...could you detail for me what i should be looking for in the external harddrive. e.g. for the internal drive plus what kind of external encloser should i be looking for? I am getting a new labtop computer, which should be coming next week and i would like to be able to have a dvd burner either already here or on the way so that i can start back to what i love to do. If you have any suggestions for burners as i see you know mounds more than me in this area. I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks

I'm not sure where you're located. For external enclosures I prefer Plumax with Bytecc in second place. I usually obtain mine from Dealsonic. Here's a link to what's available. This company does a good job in describing so start here first even if you buy elsewhere just to see what's available in features, etc.

I've had this one for a while:

My choice for an internal burner is either the BenQ 1640 or one of the NECs, either the 3540 or the 3550. I have the 3540 and an satisfied, although to booktype +R and +RW media you'll have flash with some modded firmware. You'll have to update the stock firmware to a newer version to get good burning on DL media as well. The BenQ 1640 is an excellent burner as well and firmware updates are available. I've purchase all of my burners with the exception of one Lite-on at Newegg:

It looks like the supply of the NEC 3540 is gone so only the 3550 is available. BenQs are here:
