Hi, I am curious as to what people think is an acceptable compression ratio to use with Shrink. I tend to go for copying the whole disc, including extras, but taking out any foreign audio tracks and subtitles. Usually I squeeze the extras and menus with higher compression (maybe around 50%) but let the main movie go with anything between 65% and 80% (depending on the length of the feature).

I have a 28" Samsung widescreen TV and haven't really noticed much degradation of quality in main features compressed in this way. However on extras with higher compression, sometimes when there is a lot of movement/light on the screen (eg fire or explosions), a slight chequer-board effect can be noticed.

What do other people think is the ideal compression ratio for main movie and for extras?

I've compressed down to 47% and feel it was an acceptable backup. I could not see any difference on my TV's. Granted they are not HD and at least 8 years old.

Technology has definately improved. I like to stay at 65% or above if possible.

60%-80% is acceptable, but obviously the lower the compression the better.

How often do you really watch those extras? Apply the most compression to your menus, special features, and unreferenced materials. Remove all audio except AC3 5.1 and any/all subtitles you don't need.

I have ripped the whole DVD to my HD then shrunk and burned the movie only and get anywhere from 65% to 80% on the compression. If I want the ?special features? I have burned a separate DVD also with a high compression number. With some DVD- or + discs running at .28 to .41 cents apiece (US) really not that big a deal cost wise. My friends and I buy 500 (or higher) bulk packages and share the cost that also drops the price. When the dual layer discs start to come down in price to match what we pay for current single layer DVDs then this issue will become moot. I remember when CDR used to be $5 (US) apiece so I believe it is inevitable the price will drop as more people start getting DL burners. I have played my ripped DVDs in a friend?s HD 52? plasma TV and see no difference in the whole movie ripped to a single DVD ?shrunk? with all the extras as opposed to a DVD with just the movie at a higher compression. Even compared to original disc and have yet to see any discernable difference. I?ve noticed pixelation on some movies but when you rewind to check it goes away I?m not sure why this happens and it varies from DVD player to DVD player.
