I was following the guide that shows how to convert Xvid avi's to DVD using Avi2Dvd. I was wondering if it is normal that converting a 600 mb video file to DVD will take 9GB? If it is, is it actually possible to burn that onto a normal 4.7GB DVD?

You can convert it to DVD then load the converted DVD into Shrink and Shrink it down to fit onto DVD5. This happens alot to me but when I run it threw Nero Vision Express it will compress it to fit DVD5 automaticly where I dont have to send it threw Shrink or recode a second time.

pocketx, I have had success in the past at burning Xvid files with NeroVisionExpress3, I havent converted them, just opened Nero and dragged files into window and continued next until burn. Nero trial is available at this link, you will only need package 2. 600mb will fit on to a DVD5 http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/nero-up.php

@gwendolin

Does your DVD player read XviD format? Mine does and I dont uasly convert them either I just burn to disc using Nero and play them but your DVD player needs to be compatible with XviD format to do this. I burn them to CD-R and play them.

Thanks for the help, just another question though, my DVD player doesn't support XviD, so will nerovision express still help me?

You can import the XviD file in Nero Vision Express. Start Nero Vision Express and choose to make DVD. Then pull in the XviD file. You then have the option to create chapters if you want and to create a menu if you want a menu.

Once you finish with the settings on how you want the DVD to be laid out then you will get to a point that will wrtie the DVD either to your hard drive or you can set it up to burn directly to a disc.

At this point if the XviD converted to DVD is to large to fit a DVD5 disc it will ask if you want to have it fit on DVD5 disc. Select yes and it will compress it to fit onto a DVD5 disc.

As for what gwendolin said I would asume he is saying he is burning the XviD as an XviD file and playing it on his DVD Player which has to be compatible with XviD format. Other wise you have to load it in Nero Vision Express and convert it to DVD.

@larrylje, I havent had any problems in the past just drag them into NVE3 and let it do the necessary conversions,( I assume it does that when its transcoding ) and then just let NVE finish burning. Easy 1 step.

Yeah that was what I didnt understand. It sounded like you where just brining in the XviD and burrning the XviD without converting it. But yeah it is converting to DVD and burrning to disc. You can set it up to do all of it in 1 step. Just a missunderstanding on my part.
