xbox live update problem !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok, i've softmodded my friends xbox but his dumba$$ clicked on the xbox live option (i told him not to because u cant have live work on a softmod anyways) now when you boot up instead of getting the modded dash you get the CHECKING FOR XBOX LIVE UPDATE, blah blah blah ERROR CONNECTING or something and it just stays there, now normally when this has happened to my other customers (including myself)i would just put the original xbox game and it would load and id run through the modded process and restore the mod but for some reason his xbox wont load any games so theres no way to get to the backup and it justs stays on that xbox live update screen , i've tried a few things but nothings worked, any help would be great. thanks
