What is the best method to make a copy that will play on most DVD players?

Hello all... this is my 1st post here, although I've been lurking here for a few months!
I am adept at copying DVD's (thanks to this site and its community), however, I am having trouble burning my copies correctly. I burn my backups using -R media (memorex 8x 4.7gb), and they work well on PC DVD drives, but they only work on 40% of the "set top box" or stand-alone DVD players. Asuming that my copy process is correct can anyone tell me or point me to a faq/guide that will teach me the best way to make a burn that is more compatible with stand-alone DVD plyers? TIA.

Welcome to Afterdawn!!
Try using DVD+R media and then "booktyping" it to a DVD-ROM. Booktyping writes a few extra bits during the initial part of the burn. These bits cause DVD players to treat the disc as a DVD-ROM. DVD players should always play DVD-ROM discs. This is part of the specification that players are built around.

Some, but not all DVD burners support booktyping. Newer BenQs do, Newer Pioneers do not.

Many programs, DVD Shrink for example, will give you the option to change the book type.

The first thing you should do is try different media though. You should avoid Memorex and use something like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Ritek. I get Taiyo Yuden online from Meritline or supermediastore.com. this is a lot less expensive than running down to Office Depot and buying crap Memorex.

Thank you Frank! I know about booktyping, but I think I have to use DVD+R to do that. (I'm using -R media). However I think you just made my day... You mentioned that it may be the media, and let me tell you that my copies that work on all the DVD players that I have tested happen to be on Verbatim! I think you are correct about the media being the problem! I am going to buy some more Verbatim so I can test it against my current Memorex media.

Dual montors are great, aren't they? (read it in your sig) I will never go back to single display! Just try to get them set up right in linux without defaulting to Xinerama...I did...and thats when I knew I was addicted...lol
