everyone has an opinion on whats good for them, and when i finally think i've found a great disc i hear talks through the grapevin of other disc..

i just want one with the best playback on a portable player.

please someone confirm that hyundai discs are rubbish

i need professional advice. some of you look to me like my saviour

hi klepto785 and welcome to the dvd media world~ :)

i am known around these parts as "docTY"...so, let me be the 1st to confirm for you that those hyundai's ARE a
Quote:
complete and utter waste of a mans life when it comes to playing them back
as you so eloquently stated~ :)

secondly, i have talked about this topic MANY a times here, just have a read through some of the other threads in this forum and you will see what is "good" and what is "not" :)

but, to summarize very quickly for you:

1. Taiyo Yuden (in MY OPINION, the best a man can get~ :)) in either of the formats/rated speeds as long as they are GENUINE, you are good to go...i've used thousands of the 4x DVD-R TYG01 coded media with outstanding success, hundreds of the 8x DVD-R TYG02 coded with equal success and another thousand or so of the 8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02 coded media booktyped to dvd-rom with the BEST compatibility in ALL my standalone players~ :)

2. Verbatim (just a slight notch below TY, but VERY VERY good media indeed...) MOST of mine are "made in taiwan" with the exception of the DVD+R DLs which are made in singapore~ :) i use primarily the DVD+R format 8x/16x which coded out as MCC003/MCC004 respectively~ these are great quality media that i've had countless flawless burns on...i'm more of a "dvd+r" format guy myself, as i naturally booktype them ALL to dvd-rom to ensure the highest possible level of compatibility anywhere~ :)

3. Ritek Ridata (haven't used QUITE as many of these as the previous 2, however, good stuff...i've only used the RitekG05 coded *8x dvd-r* Ridata branded *500+ backups*, with great success...haven't yet tried any RitekR03s coded stuff (8x dvd+R), but i respect the opinions of my peers gurnard, saugmon, and catfreak that HAVE used them extensively~

4. Maxell (made in Japan only) in either format...i have a few hundred of these under my belt, excellent playback~ :) they code out as MXLRG03 for the 8x DVD-R and Maxell002 for the 8x DVD+R, those are the only 2 kinds of maxells that i've used...as for the made in taiwan stuff, it's identical coding in the 8x DVD-R as my RitekG05s as mentioned in #3 and for the 8x DVD+R it's the RitekR03s, also mentioned above in #3 :) so those are good too~ :)

5. hmmm...my #5 choice would be a difficult one to say, as if i can't find the above 4, then i just wait until i CAN get more in stock...but, let my #5 just be a warning as to what NOT to get....

*Memorex, TDk, HP, Philips, Princo, KHypermedia, less known store brands with the ONLY exception of Office Depot as their discs are Ritek made from what my buddies say...*

most will agree on the pure CRAP of CMC MAG manufactured discs, and this is apparent in all the above mentioned brands except Princo, and they are just worse than CMC MAG...also, i PERSONALLY have a deep hatred towards TDK's own manufactured media with the TTG01/TTG02 coding...IN MY OWN OPINION, this is some of the WORST CRAP i've EVER had the unfortunate experience of EVER trying...

i've used about 80% of ALL the discs out there available in the U.S., so, from EXPERIENCE, i dont' comment on manufacturers/brands UNLESS i've tried them myself~ :) i have used/tried dozens of different brands over the years, so take that into account, i'm not just saying stuff out of my a$$ :) LOL

another note that my #1 suggestion, being Taiyo Yuden, you CAN find these under some of the local brands such as Fuji/Sony in the 8x DVD+R format, BUT, it MUST BE MADE IN JAPAN on the label...that is how you distinguish between the "good stuff" and the "not so good stuff"...

for instance, in the Fuji 8x DVD-R, if you get the "made in taiwan" spindles, you will most likely get the Prodisc coded media, this is NOT EVEN CLOSE to the quality of the TYG02 Taiyo Yuden made media from Japan~ so, it comes down to what it says on the wrapper...LOOK FOR THE "MADE IN JAPAN" for Fuji/Sony media~ :) both the MADE IN JAPAN 8x DVD+R for Fuji/Sony are YUDEN000T02 coded TAIYO YUDEN made~ VERY VERY good stuff, i have used COUNTLESS amounts of them with superb results~ :) highly recommended by me~

whew..that was quite a lengthy post, hope that clarifies some of your concerns regarding media...if in doubt, let me know and i will verify and put your questions to rest...

as with ALL things, everyone will have their OWN opinions as to which medias work BEST FOR THEM, this is just MY own little "guide" as to what HAS/DOES work for me over the years and i STILL use what i suggest to this day~ :)

docTY~

as per my sig. there are some more media ID codes for TY/Verbs as well as the DL discs, also, i have 6 diff. burners now, so, the suggested media above works WELL FOR ME on Pioneers, Liteons, Sonys, NEC, and Benq~ :) (i have never owned a Plextor, but i KNOW for a fact they are VERY good burners...LG/Samsung never owned one of their burners either, but have heard good things...all the other brands are usually "rebadged something or another" of the brands i listed above...)

good luck and happy burning (ON GOOD QUALITY MEDIA of course) :)

@ klepto

i can't stand ANY of those 3 BRANDS, but, the Philips one is the ONLY good media ID code out of the 3, those i SUPPOSE are MCC coded (legit) and if they ARE genuine, then they should be very good~ :)

as i mentioned earlier, i DESPISE TDK's own coded media..anything that starts w/ "TT"...the ending of the media code is only to differentiate between DVD-R and DVD+R format and the rated speed~ :)

the white inkjet printables for the Verbatim SHOULD be top notch, assuming they are MCC coded (made by Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp), and Fuji...i haven't tried any of their printables, so, i am not sure what they will code out to be~ :) BUT, if they're "made in japan", MOST LIKELY they will be Taiyo Yuden manufactured and are GREAT discs~

hope that helps slightly, stay away from the "TTxxx" coded media...anything that starts with TT is TDK's OWN brand of garbage~ :)

The Phillips 4X disks I've used will code out as CMC MAG, F01, (Crap) bought some from Circuit City a couple of years ago at 15 cents per unit, and since then have transferred all of them to Office Depot 8X (Ritek G-05)
@Kivory666, Your advice about using cheap media should be included in part of the quick install guides for all DVD burners, could have saved me months of trying to figure out which media works for various stand alone DVD players. Like DocTY says, can't go wrong with the good stuff.

Taiyo Yuden hub printables all the way... Less than 50 cents a disc (after shipping) from rima.com or supermediastore.com... No rummaging through spindles looking for "Made in Japan," no waiting for a sale, just good prices on the BEST media everyday! I usually buy in spindles of 100 in both formats. Lately, the -R has been almost $20 bucks cheaper per 100 pack than the +R...

why everyday do i learn the lesson that "its not about quantity its about quality" and "if you buy cheap you buy twice"?

why don't i learn?

well i have now and i'm going to buy some taiyo udens now thanks to you.

thanks 4 the knowledge

Your reference to pounds made me think that you are in the UK. If you want TY media here i have found SVP to be very reliable and you can get TY coded Verbatim's for £6.70 for 25 for 8x ones here:

To Doc, J Savage or anyone who knows:
I have a Samsung player that only plays the minus mode. I?ve had problems with DVD?s I?ve burned (my post http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/263173 ) I was looking at some Verbatim 16X DVD-R or DVD+R at Office Max (15.00 for 50). I wanted to ask you what you thought about these. I also (being a novice at this whole thing) wanted to know what you mean by ?DVD+r's book typed to DVD-ROM?. You can answer these questions at my post or here (I don?t want to get into any trouble with protocol).
Thanks

Here is a link that will explain bitsetting/booktyping.

http://img336.imageshack.us/img336/6278/dvdbooktyping50ag.png

Hope that this helps you out. Your DVD play that only plays DVD-R's will also play +R's that have been booktyped to DVD-ROM.

Hi uncleb..

I'm new to this too but I'm learning fast thanks to this site...To book type to DVD-ROM you have to use DVD+R which is the industry standard for DVD's you buy I do believe, please correct me if I'm wrong. I use a small program for book typing from Lite-on's site for my Lite-on DVD burner. Not sure about your's but it wont matter for as you cant burn DVD+R with your DVD burner...

For media I'm using Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R which now I feel is the best you can buy...I havent tryed Verbatim yet but as Ive been reading is just as good as TY's...
