im new to this,and im probably doing something stupid,i want to convert my avi/divx movies to mpeg to burn to dvd,i have downloaded tmpge thanx to afterdawn and using their advice but when it comes to open the file i want to use it says "can not open or unsupported".please help !!!!

Try this: open TMPGEnc and close wizard. On main page, select Options > Environmental Settings > VFAPI plug-in and raise the priority of Directshow Multimedia File Reader to 2 by right clicking on it and choosing "raise priority" until it's 2.

Hey don't feel stupid. I have the same issue with TMPGEnc Plus as well. I raised my Directshow priority to 2 and it still says it cannot open. It seems to open MPG files but not avi's. I feel your pain! Any other ideas out there?

Certainly, nobody should feel stupid. Raising Directshow solved that issue for me and any ideas I have are pure guesses. You could try raising the priority of other file types in VFAPI plug-in or open the file in G-Spot and make sure the proper codecs are installed or reinstall TMPGEnc and try again. Good luck.

You can even Try Disableing the "Direct Show MultiMedia File Reader" and Raise the Priority of the "AVI VFW File Reader" which should also work....
Also if you have an older version of "FFDShow Decoder" installed then it will cause this problem but if you install the Very latest version then TMPGEnc should work properly in "Direct show" mode...

i have tried prioritizing the directshow thing and the avi VFW but i still cannot open my avi in tmpgenc, any other ideas?

Thanks again Minion and Mistycat. I messed with the various priority setting and nothing seems to work. Then I grabbed GSpot and it gave me some more insight. When i tested the AVI I was trying to transcode, it picked up the codec as being DivX 5.0 and the video stat said "No Codec(s) installed". The reported compression was MPG4. Being somewhat of a newb here, i'm not sure what to do from here! The codec test said it was unable to render video in the GSpot test. The MS test came back fine using a combination of filters, and reported the AVI splitter and renderer as being quartz.dll and the decoder as Nero Video Decoder (NeVideo.ax). I suppose that makes sense as to why the files are able to be viewed, but not recoded. Again, i'm leaning towards possibly have a codec prob? Any thoughts gurus? Thanks a bunch!

As far as codecs are concerned, I have used only the Kazaa Lite codec Pack (standard) for the last year and a half with not a problem. It is available at Edskes or here at AD (I believe) and contains GSpot and WMP Classic. I don't know if it matters but I would uninstall your copy of GSpot first if you're going to use it. WMP Classic can download over top of itself, so doesn't matter. I also may be wrong but I believe I have read that many codecs can interact and cause problems which is another reason I use only the KL codec Pack. Good luck.

If you opt to install the KL codec Pack, you can choose selections within it not to install, like GSpot. Forgot that, sorry.

Thanks for the tip Mistycat. I think the Nero codec is the one giving me the problem. I'll give the KL pack a try. I looks like both TMPGEnc and GSpot run from a local directory and don't actually install anyway, but i'll keep the install options in mind. Is there a way to safely remove questionable codecs?

Alright Mistycat...problem solved!!! Thanks again. Loaded the Kazaa codec pack and that fixed things. GSpot reported no codec for my AVI files, which is why TMPGEnc would not open them. Loaded the codecs now i'm good to go! Happy Burning!
