If the movies are in a popular video format (e.g. AVI, mpeg), many programs (e.g. Nero, DVDSanta) can do that at encoding.

Agree with sillycybe but might add:

Why in GOD's name would you want to do that? Watch TV shows if you want square pictures. Movies are not TV. Movies are Widescreen. Decide which you like and stop trying to figure out a way to butcher an art form. Even in kindergarten, kids know they can't fit a rectangular block into a square hole without a power-saw.

Or buy a bigger TV or a widescreen TV. Market analysts have predicted that, due to multi-manufacturer competition, the lowered production levels of "full-screen" aka "standard" TV monitors (due to consumer enlightenment and demand for ownership of home DVD movies and the coming TV broadcasting switch to WS), market conditions will change in 2006 to allow for widescreen TV's being available for almost the same price as "square" TV's. For your information, all TV broadcasts will be in 1.77:1 to 1.85:1 widescreen format within 5 years. Some networks are selectively broadcasting in WS even now.

scf_au,
Respect your seniority but are there not negative consequences to your suggestion? Such as the change in aspect ratio will result in a "distorted/stretched/squeezed" image or the right & left sides of the movie will be chopped off randomly just to fit it into reeshmd's square TV format. Neither of those programs allow for remastering via Pan & Scan. No consumer program allows for that.

Also, across the board, all the Hollywood movie production studios will soon stop delivering DVD's in Pan & Scan due to lower consumer demand. This is due to consumer enlightenment, the popularity of 16:9 TV monitors and the great expense of re-authoring the original WS to P&S, and the cost of the manufacturing and distributing of two different versions of a movie.

Best regards,
Whisperer

Sorry if I was curt but this subject is a hot button of mine.

Dear Whisperer,

Our friend reeshmd asked a question and I simply gave a suggestion. I am not going to presume whether he knows what he's doing or not. May be he has a special reason for doing that, or may be he just likes to explore. Either way it's not going to do any major damage. So why not leave it to our friend reeshmd?

reeshmd,

Hmmm, I dont know if this will help you or not, BUT - if i recall, the very old program DVD X COPY used to let you make a choice and I BELIEVE 1Click also lets you make a choice. It has been a long time since I have used either of these programs, and you did mention you used to have a program that did it and could not remember the name of it. Maybe it was one of those programs.

Also, even if you dont get a chance to change your preference for your encoding stage, I know on most (if not all) dvd players - you can always change the option in your dvd player settings.

Like I said, I am not sure if this info will help you, but just in case - there is my two cents on it.

If you prefer FS to WS - you certainly have that right to do so. Hopefully, you can get the answer(s) you need, if not from me then someone else.

scf_au,

I thought I saw that as an option in Nero before also, but I could not remember which particular Nero program (ie: express. recode, vision express, etc)

I hate watching movies in full screen. I like to have the original theatrical aspect of the film I'm watching.

I have a 52 Pioneer projection TV and prefer WS movies even with black bars. Black bars will not burn in the screen, my owners maual cautions using the TV in regular 4:3 display this shows white bars at the side of the screen. Black is not bright enough to burn anything, but white is and will. All of the TV manufactures relize that their 16:9 models are going to produce black bars at the top and bottom of the screen when you view 2.35:1 movies.
I realy don't think you have to worry about WS movies not filling the entire screen. All large screen TVs have several settings to reduce the width of those bars and eliminate them all together, if it bothers you.
