When I play Back up disks I?ve made with DVD Shrink they work great for about One Hour and fifteen to twenty minutes or so, then they start to freeze, breakup, start showing pixels and so on. I want to back up some Adam Sandler flicks, and some kids flicks for my granddaughter. My son burnt a couple on his DVD burner with DVD Shrink & played them on my DVD player (a 2003 Samsung) and they were fine. Any ideas, I could sure use your help.

Yep, most certainly sounds like a media issue burned way too fast.
Use quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim and burn at 4x.

Actually I'm Burning them as slow as I can. I've used Shrink to burn & sometimes Nero 7. I've been using TDK's and burning DVD-R's. Like I said my son did pretty much the same thing and his burnt copies played on my machine. although I need to ask him what kind of DVD's he used.

you mean you have used shrink in conjuction with nero7 as shrink isnt a burning application.It utilises another program to burn your disc.
Nero 7 i would probably suggest that you go back to an earlier version say the recode version and see if the problem persists.I'm not a fan off the new version as the one i'm using i have never had a problem with.

I have had the same problem. I am using soy disk burned at 4x speed. finnaly I gave up and im going to start using AnyDVD and clonedvd2 cause i got sick of trying to figure that damn thing out. Let me know if different disk work

Use Nero infotool/dvd decrypter/dvdidentifier/or dvdinfopro and tell us the MID code.

Preferences
Click dvd-5/scroll till custom/enter 4300 next to custom
Click ok.
That's your new backup target size.If it helps,you can try increasing it up to 4360 mbs.This will keep the burn from reaching the outer edge.That's the area of uneven dye.This increases compression a little,but can prevent playback issues when they occur at the end of backups.

Okay, you got the target size down. Now what about the burn speed? You need to keep it to 4x or less to prevent burn errors.
From the outset use good media like taiyo yuden, verbatim, maxell, sony (the latter two made in Japan). Slow burn speed and correct target size and you will be good to go unless there are other problems in system configuration.

The 8x speed sony discs are a lot better quality than their older 4x speed.
Give us the exact issues. Reducing target size usually only helps on the end of backups.Issues in other problems are usually stand alone player problems.Some burners have trouble with certain brands of media.More info would help like DVD-RW model# and other programs used.

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:
1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)
2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.
Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28604

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".
Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). They are the Sony 8x disc. I was playing the disk in my playstation however when i took it out and put it in my pioneer stand alone player i ad no problems. I will reduce the target size to 4200 as well. Thanks all

thack79: Since your other stand alone plays it fine/sony 8x media is very good/and if you tried reducing that burn speed: Sounds more like something about your ps2 doesn't like your backups. Maybe a lens cleaning. Those ps2s are a pain in the a**. I've seen quite a few that wouldn't play sony media. Go figure!

I was having the same problem as you. Close to the end of the movie(outside of disc), it would start to pixilate and then freeze in my PS2. I was burning at 4x with verbatim media like always. Every movie I made on a verbatim disc from that cake box froze. Just because you use a name brand doesn't mean that they don't put out crap once in a while. Listen to what these guys are saying, switch to taiyo yuden discs and reset you target size. Since I did, not one problem. And by the way thanks for the info guys. Please don't get tired of answering our newbie questions.

Wow,
You all really rallied to help me. Like I originally said my son?s burned DVD-R?s seemed to play good in my player. This made me think it might be my burner. I burnt a couple of DVD?s and gave them to him so he could try them in his player. He said of the 4 I gave him 3 worked fine (they didn?t for me). So I think the player has something to do with it. I?m going to go to Circuit City with a couple of Burnt DVD?s and try them in some of their Stand alone players. I?ll let you know how it goes (if it makes a difference). It wouldn?t hurt is some of you might have a suggestion on which player (reasonably priced of course) seems to be more successful with playing burnt DVD?s, and what DVD?s seem to work best. Like I said I used Sony?s & TDK?s. Also I quit using Nero and use Decrypter & Shrink together. I use the deep analysis, slowest burn speeds, changed the size (as you suggested) and like I said these things haven?t helped. I am thinking that even though I?m using what I would consider to be good quality Disks as one of you said that doesn?t mean much cause things aren?t always consistent. About a year ago I posted a problem I was having with burning CD?s and Taiyo Yuden
was suggested, I sent away for some and they made all the difference in the world. I never thought about them making DVD?s. Maybe you all might have a reasonably priced source and type of Yuden you think I should get. I keep stressing reasonably priced because I already have a stand alone player, and am thinking of getting another just to play these damn DVD?s. And I?ve already purchased and blown a wad on DVD?s (Sony & TDK).
Again thanks for all the help. Here?s hoping & praying I can use all thin info and finally get some positive results. I?ll keep checking the posts & posting my results hoping they might help others with similar problems.

Hello uncleb, Not only do stand alone vary at reading backups,they can even tell a difference between which burners that made those backups. You'd be surprised how they vary as well.I've got 6 pc burners and a tv burner.I also have access to a few friends and family pcs to test out each other's burns. This would be the battle between the stronger burners and weaker burners.
Fixing that pixellation/pausing/skipping and other playback issues are easier.When you run into the No disc inserted errors,then that's another ball game.You've got different drives to mess around with to troubleshoot those issues.
Since you're using deep analysis: This means there is compression on your backups.That too can cause playback issues on picky stand alones. You may consider reducing compression by re-authoring for main movie only.Just something to try. I like main movie only because of no messing around with finding my remotes.
Stick with the quality media.It will definitely prevent a lot of playback issues.You don't have to pay more for it,just pick it up while it is on sale.Lots of ty media out there in the japanese fuji 8x/japanese Plus format sony 8x/ and some quality hitachi media on the japanese maxell 8x for both formats.Just look those labels over good.They are usually mixed together with the taiwanese spindles and for the same exact price!Of course you can go to a reputatable webstore for genuine ty or verbatim.
Since you prefer the dash format: Ty/verbatim/and the japanese spindles of fuji/sony/and maxell.Even the Office Depot 8x riteks are very good and an excellent on sale price. Avoid:Taiwanese fuji/ memosux/tdk/HP/and other generic/storebrand name media in that dash format.Tdk dash use to be pretty good,but I've been seeing lots of quality problems by fellow AD members like yourself.

Hey everyone. I'm new here. I have the same problem with the freezing after an hour and a half or so. Here's the thing though. I am using Ridata media, which I was told to get because they were supposed to be of good quality. Are they good? Second, I have been backing up my DVDs for about half a year now, using DVD Shrink and Nero, and things have been perfect up until this last couple of weeks. So that makes me think the media is fine, since there were no problems the last half year. Have you any answers or experience with this yourselves? Can it be a problem with the burner, and how do I check for that? If I delete the movie from my hard drive and then reopen the movie with DVD Shrink, using the disk I just burned, it works fine and has no freezing problem. It's only when I use the dvd player to watch on my tv that the freezing problem happens. Thanks for your help.

supposably this also occurs after your disc has been compressed just above 50% (eg 56%) or below it which is what the problem may be, have you tried backing up the movie only...
might help otherwise as andmerr stated it may be your media...
also from my experience after wear and tear on your drive this starts to happen...
be wary these are only suggestions...

thanks phantom. to answer ur question, no i don't have it compressed that much. at most i compress down to about 70%. i do just the movie, and i cut out the end credits and any director's commentary audio. im leaning towards it being a problem with the burner, which would suck. but i figure id come and see if anyone had a solution. hmm. tho i can reopen the movie from the burned disk, into dvdshrink, and it works perfectly fine. so anyone here have experience with Ridata brand dvds? someone recommended them and said they were good, but i haven't seen that particular brand mentioned here when people make suggestions on good quality media.

Freezing and pauses, pixelations make me think of two things. Bad media and burning too close to the edge at too high of speed.
In shrink set target size to 4300 and in your burn program set your burn speed to 4x.
I know that you said that you don't think that it could be the media. What kind (Brand and type) of media are you using?

Hey whats up 9mm. I am using Ridata dvdr's, and believe it or not ive been burning at 2.4x just to try to make it burn right. You know just to experiment I actually added extra stuff (deleted scenes, outtakes, etc) so that the total timespan of the material to be burned would be like 3 hrs, where only the first 2 hrs is the movie. For example, the Matrix movie. My thinking was by doing this, maybe the extras will have the pause and skip problem, but the main movie would get by okay. It didn't work though. It still skips right around 1.5 to 1.75 hrs into it. To sum up the other info, I've been burning for the last 6 months and everything has been working fine until a couple of weeks ago. So the same media and burner has been working fine. My guess now is it might be a problem with the burner, but im not able to look into getting a new one yet, and dont even know if i SHOULD in case this burner is actually fine. The burned discs can be opened in DVDshrink and play with no problem, so I was thinking maybe the problem is with my dvd player that's hooked up to my tv. But that doesn't seem the case either since the original discs play fine. Anyway, thanks for your help and any suggestions you can offer.
