Let me see if I understand the question as I am an old fart and need clear descriptions.
Quote: they all worked fine one minute now they r chucking a mental.
Your burned DVD's worked fine, or the programs used to work fine and now they don't?
Please be a little more descriptive of the problem. We want to help you through this.
Explain what the error messages are that you are getting.

Sorry, yes all the pograms worked fine one minute, then the next time i went to back up dvds they all came up with - failed to copy dvd;96. Some would start like normal then half way through copying it would stop and the failed would come up. I had similar problem about 2 or 3 months back, but it was the opposite - it copyed but wouldnt burn and that would say failed to burn DVD9! I had to re format my laptop, but i would rather not have to do that again if it could be helped. I would reallly appreciate it if someone could help me out

How about a little information about what format/DVD you are trying to burn and what programs you are using?
System specs would also be useful.

I have to apologise - i am not really up with a lot of this stuff but i will try and explain a bit better. I have used shrink, dvd fab express, and clone dvd. the media i am using is tdk (which i havent had any previous trouble with) and the movies i am backing up are just normal movies same as ones u would hire - sorry dontknow if that helps but i am a bit dumb at this

The reason I am questioning the media being used is that DL media is dual layer or a DVD9, and you are indicating that the burn stops half way through the burn. Quote: failed to copy dvd;96
and again Quote: ...say failed to burn DVD9!
So I am wondering if you are using the correct media for your situation.
Now TDK, this is not normally considered quality media. I would suggest a change of media type to Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Sony, Maxell (made in Japan).
Here is a guide for burning a DL (dual layer) disc:

Dual layer discs are fairly expensive so I would consider changing to DVD5 discs. These are single layer. Here is a guide for using this process:
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=49051
And DVDdecrypter:

If you use these guides step by step you should be burning correctly in no time.
Post back your results.

Its not actually the media thats not working this time. it fails to copy the original disc. it will either come up with failed to copy first up or it will coy halfway then stop. it still plays the movies fine and everything else is normal.i can burn a copied disc no worries
