What do you mean? I always get good quality ripping with Imtoo.

Re. output settings for AVI, I normally use XviD for video and mp3 for audio.

how about your resolution?

and for the max frame do you click the "whole" button?

and for the zoom what do you use so that the video quality turns out really nice? the full (16/9 or 4/3 input), None (letter box 4/3), medium (4/3) or panscan (4/3) ?

thanks a lot

I use Gordian Knot
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/gord...
with the XviD codec.
1.85:1 source is encoded to 640 x 352
2.35:1 source is encoded to 704 x 304
1.33:1 source (4:3 fullscreen) is actually most demanding pixel-wise; I will encode longer movies 512 x 384 but short (~90minutes) source can go 640 x 480.
I will use AC3 2.0 audio directly (if available), otherwise VBR MP3.
Always do 2-pass backup with max quality settings.
It took ~5 hours; 1.5 hours (first pass) and 3.5 hours (second pass) to do Sith, which is almost 2.5 hour film :^)
My PC spec's listed below - quality was fabulous! Let it run overnight...

hey thanks a lot for your help

by the way with regard to the audio and video synchornization what i mean is sometimes the voice goes first before the lips of the person opens get it? that happened ones to me when i ripped ms congeniality. but its ok now, thanks for the gordian knot tip maybe i'll make use of that as well. i really dont have to run it overnight to make it ultra clear since i will eventually convert this to mpeg4 for my ipod video, when converted then viewed in the ipod everything is actually clear :)

Typical target size would be 700MB (or 1 CD).
I took two runs at Sith, first 700MB incl. the AC3 2.0 audio.
Then 1400MB incl. the AC3 5.1 audio.
It is a long movie with much action (motion/complexity).
I tell you, the 700MB version is amazing - the bitrate was really strangled but product looks very good (sorry George ;^) LoL
Actually I've given a LOT of my money to 20th Century Fox over the years, including StarWars BoxSet Laserdisks @ $115 bucks each, etc. and I am only backing-up DVDs I have purchased, for my private LAN...
But for years, we have known 'rule of thumb' you cannot backup 150 minute scifi action movie to 700MB and maintain quality - but I have done it very well, even including AC3 audio (MP3 audio could have been little bit smaller, since AC3 2.0 is equivalent to 192kb CBR MP3).
Took 5 hours overnight though.

Yeah I get it - Nandub, direct copy both A & V, advance or retard audio relative to video to achieve synch at beginning.
If synch then wanders as film progresses, that is another matter.
Can then adjust video framerate (trial & error) to achieve synch at end.
If synch at beginning, and synch at end, if wanders around in middle of film there's nothing you can do...
This is usually caused by 'lazy' MP3 codec and is unusual when AC3 audio is used directly.

That is what we're making, an MPEG4 XviD AVI :^)
What resolution is recommended/required by your ipod?
It would be good to backup directly to ipod format (not do it in 2 steps or stages...)
