Recently, I just noticed my ps2 isn't loading some of the backups like it use to and during the some of the games that it does load, once in awhile there is a skip.

I have only had this ps2 for 1 year and I bought it brand new and kept it in great condition. I use the highest media for backups and I was wondering if my system is dying?

OR do you think the laser needs cleaning?

It might be a problem with your laser. More often than not trying cleaning the laser with compressed air and or a soft clean qtip or cotton. smoething not to rough. if that doesnt work do a search on laser calibration. you might have to adjust the laser just a bit. how do regular discs work? anyh problems with those? do you hear a clicking sound? if so, it may need a little bit of oil/gel on the rims of the laser. the metal part that moves up and down.

there is a guide for both cleaning and adjusting the laser.
Worst case you can just have it replaced.
Should be about $50 for a laser and $35 for an install, plus shipping of course.

In stores, there's these dvd cleaners that you can buy. They are basically dvds with little brushes on the bottom.
Will those help?
I really don't want to open my ps2.

Don't use a DVD cleaner. It might make things worse! You will need to open it up and clean it. It is a very simple process and even easier with the link that steimy provided.
