Greetings -

I've been using the (very fine) guide that Alkohol wrote for newbies (ya, I'm a newbie). :-)

I've got an HP Z545 DEC with a LiteOn SOHW-1633S that is OEM'd to HP. It's got the latest firmware from HP (different than from LiteOn because it's OEM, I guess), and I use the best media I can get (Maxell +R MIJ). Bottom line is NOTHING I do makes a DVD that I can play on my standalone players...at home, in the car, or on the boat. :-( Actually, 1 out of 10 might play "upstairs", but I need something a little more reliable.

So I thought I'd get a new burner for my work-horse 'puter to do my burning (allowing me to watch TV and PVR while I do so).

I'm looking for recommendations on the best burner drive out there. I also wonder if LightScripe is worth the extra $$... it seems that's the way of the future, but I don't know much about it (sounds "cool" though).

Tired of making discs that'll play in this machine, but not that one, and sometimes on this player, but certainly not the one in the bedroom... ya know?

if you are looking to spend some bucks you can go with Plextor a very good brand but expensive. I have the 716UF and it burns beautifully. Also if you are thinking of lightscribe which I also have in an HP640C which is a rebadged BenQ, the go with a BenQ they are very good/reliable and will booktype your DVD+R to DVD-Rom which is playable on most DVD players even the older ones that only like -R format. The Plextor will also do this.

LG's are top of the line as well.

So many choices...so little time.

God, ya got that right...there are thousands of choices...but I think I want a super-compatible, super-reliable and (maybe) LightScribe compatible burner. I've got a 3ghz PC with a pair of 300gb drives in it which is a little better suited for burning than my "TV computer". :-)

As an aside, I just re-did the entertainment system on my boat that includess a Clarion VS755 DVD player. That thing acts wierd with burned copies- it might play the disc, and it MIGHT play the directors commentary with no way to switch it off! Odd, hm? Sometimes it plays just fine. I figure it's all related to my burner.

Thanks for all the pointers so far!

When you go to burn your DVD uncheck the 2 channel audio and only keep the 5.1 that way you will not get the Directors Comments, they are always 2 channel.

When you do decide, make sure that the burner of choice will booktype to DVD-ROM. Very important so that your backups will play in just about any standalone player.

Here some information for you.

9mm - thanks - I sure will! Interestingly, my hp-branded LiteOn 1633S uses a different firmware that is available from LiteOn. This makes me a LITTLE nervous about buying another burner that says HP on the outside and has "HP Branded Firmware". Anyway, when I try to "book type" using the utility, it says it isn't supported. However, when I'm done with the burn, it shows as DVD-ROM, so I guess it's getting set by the HP-branded firmware or something.

Interestingly, I've NEVER burned a coaster...they ALL have played in my computer (where I burned) and in my Sony standalong burner (RDR-GX7). It's my old players that won't play them (some of them - sometimes they do). I think Santa will be bringing a bunch of +R/+RW/-R/-RW *players* for the kids. I still worry about the boat too - like I said, it's brandie-new. :-) The missus would have a cow if I told her I was gonna re-fit that entertainment system (yet again).

Arnie - When I started backing up my DVD's I used DVD+RW discs to write with, and I've got a STACK that play the "directors commentary". Do you suppose I can somehow rip the files again, and re-burn them without the 2-channel? I wonder how I could do dat.

You guys have been a HUGE help!

Thanks!
jc

Of course, now it looks like I need a new freebe decrypter. Bummer - I liked "DVD Decrypter"...

Yes you can rerip them and change the audio and then just reburn. You can still use DVD Decrypter it is still out there to be had. Although the disks you already have done are no longer protected you can just rip and burn and not worry about the protection, if you have Nero just use Recode and change what you want or Shrink will do it to. As far as free ripper you can use the free DVD FabDecrypter it will do all the new protections and is available here at AD or from http://www.filepedia.com or the DVDIdle site.

My HP burner automatically booktypes yours must do the same, it is a nice feature.
