Attempted to copy "Fight Club" video to DVD using Panasonic DMR-ES10 recorder, first try came up with "writing to disc" before I asked it to, tried again, got "Copy protected, writing info to disc". Result both discs destroyed. Could any one please help, or is this insoluble using my existing equipment?

Just an FYI but there is a DVD Recoder section here for this type of question.
But to answer your question, if you are talking about a pre-recorded VHS tape you own then you would need a filter between your VHS player and your Panasonic DVD recorder to remove the copy protection on the VHS tape.
Products like that do exist on line, however they do have draw
backs some of which are:
They are still considered illegal.
They are an added expense.
They can leave the protection effects (brightness shifts, screen folding, or poor audio)in your transfer.
At that point I would recommend just buying the DVD.
If you have several movies on VHS that you would like to put into your DVD collection then you might want to see if you have a place that sells used or close out DVD's locally. They can be a good and most times a cheap source to replace your VHS tapes with DVD's.
Regards

Thanks clifjcb, sounds like very good advice,I've already decided to follow it, hated the movie anyway. It was just an easier way to store it, will give it to someone who might like it instead !

A lot of it depends on the VCR and the type of protection incorperated into the tape. Some pre-recorded movies you will be able to convert without a problem others will not.

I read your post with interest as I am in the process of converting mytape based movie collection to dvd. The major difference is that my movie collection is 98% on Beta video tapes. For the most part, I don't have the copy protection issues as most Beta tapes do not have it included in the signal, but there are a few VHS tapes and some 'backups' of VHS movies that, although on Beta tape, still have the copy protection imbedded in the signal.

I do use a filter and I find that it brightens up the print and also gets rid of some noise too.

As clifjcb mentioned, I also seek out the sales and some used video sources for copies of the movies I have. Additionally, I find them in the public library channel although most times the copies are quite scratched.

Have fun with your project.

It's amazing that you still have a working tank. Kind of ironic considering it's happening again with the next gen format for DVD's.
Keep that puppy ticking since it actually may be worth a bit if Sony's bluray goes the same way as Beta did. Kind of like still having a 58 Edsel, laughed at when it came out but now those that still own one can laugh all the way to the bank.
