Try disabling your drive in device manager, reboot and let windows reenable it.

I think Mort meant to say uninstall the drive through the device manager then reboot your PC and windows will reinstall the drive when it comes back up.

New here also but have you tried different discs and a different brand of media? I have had that trouble in the past and it was caused by bad media and from a disc that supposedly was not burned but apparently it was. I tried to reuse it and got that error. Other than that, let the pros have at it.
Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
2.20 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 3700+
Board: ASUSTek Computer INC. Amberine M 1.03
ASUS CD-S480/A5
HP DVD Writer 740b DL w/lightscribe
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 series graphics onboard

Does the drive read disks? If it does can you read other burned disks? Some drives dont read burned disks very well which could mean its out of alignment. Generally a drive will read originals easier than burned. If it doesnt read disks do you have any special drivers installed like for easy cd creator and the like. I once had a problem with software designed to write the disk on the fly that came with my computer.

I once had an error like that on my HP and after hours on the phone with tech support I found out my drive was bad. They sent me a new one and everything worked OK after that. Just an idea.

And I am using Verbatim DVD+R
I did all the above and it still did read blank discs but it would read CD-ROM's all day long.
I found out that my burner is bad.

The one thing I have yet to see you say for sure is if the drive can read any disk, pre-recorded or not.
Before you condemn the drive yet I would double check the IDE cable at both the drive and Mobo end and reset them and make sure you do not have any bent pins on the drive or Mobo. After that if there is still no resolution I'd have to think that the drive maybe toast.

What is the firmware version? It should be 2.1g
Sometimes if a drive does not recognize media it needs to have the firmware flashed to a newer version.
Post back with your firmware version so we can check it out or you can get it here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces
