When I'm copying DVDs, I look to see how much compression is required. If "too much", then I'll re-author just the main movie. I'm not interested in the other audio comentary and special features of most discs.

What level of compression do YOU set as a threshold for deciding to just re-author the main movie? 75%? 85%

Let's say I do a Full Backup of a movie at 75% compression. How would I notice any imperfections in the resulting disc? Artefacts on the screen? Slurred audio? Do imperfections show up based on the screen size (what if I watch it on my non-HD 20" screen or my 50" HD set?)

You can just do a main movie with nothing else and still recieve this kind of compression

At 75% you may not notice anything at all, but yes you will notice pixellation, artifacts, slurred speech and freezing which may be noticebly visible on bigger sets and HD.

For higher compression use Deep Analysis in Shrink along with AEC (quality) enhancements in Shrink. For compression at 85% to 70% use Smooth for below use Max Smooth, this will help with Shrink better meeting the target size, although it will take sometime for your transcoding.
