My PS2 backups are skipping and freezing...

I've backed up a lot of my PS2 games and they all work fine. However in the last month or so, all my backups have been skipping, lagging, mainly on the cutscenes. For example, on POP: Warrior Within, I'll be running along and the game will just lock up for about 15-30 seconds, then it will let me continue. I can't think of a reason why all my backups would start doing this all of a sudden. Some of them aren't bad, like only the cutscenes will be choppy. I've tried different types of media, tried burning at 2x, nothing. I'm curious if maybe my slim PS2 is jacked up, or if my burner is going bad. I've only had it for about 5 months. Has this happened to anyone else?

Have you tried cleaning your laser yet? If not, try that and see if it helps.

Well I have cleaned my PS2 laser to no avail, I have not tried to clean the laser on my DVD burner...can you that with one of those DVD player cleaner discs? Secondly, I was using Imation, which sucked, but since then I've used Sony and Verbatim DateLifePlus. That still didn't fix the problem.

Some games require higher speeds when burnt, can/have you tried burning at a higher speed like x4?

yes, you can burn them at 4X but only if you are using
8X speed DVD's
Are you using +R or -R DVD's and what speed are they?
I like the Philips 8X DVD-R for all mine
Have had a 100% success rate with PS2 & Xbox games.

All the DVDs I buy are 8x. I burn them at 8x. I've tried burning them at 4x and 2x for better results, but it hasn't made a difference. Like I said, all my backups were working perfectly up until a few weeks ago.

I have the exact same problem. All the recent dvds I burn skip. Mostly during cut scenes. My most recent was the worst. It skips every few seconds. I used taikyo yudens. 8x ritek ridatas as well. I used to use 4x ridatas but can't find them anymore. I updated my firmware too.
