My PS2 has died again, and rather than send it off to be repaired again i fancy having a go at repairing it myself.

The likely problem is the laser. As we all know playing back-ups will eventually burn out the laser and boy can my kids play some back-ups. Although the fact that there doesnt seem to be much noise in the way of the disk spinning on boot up has me concerned. On top of this its a very old mod chip so i appreciate things are looking grim.

Edited to point out couple of thigs that might help.

1. It goes to the browser screen as opposed to the disk read error screen on start-up.

2. It wont play original or back-ups

Anyway questions for the forum.

1. Is there a way i can diagnose the problem i.e with an online questionare or something similar?.

2. Where can i find i good indepth tutorial with photos on how to replace the laser?

3. Wheres a good place to buy a replacement laser? With the hundreds to choose from online I'm guessin its prob safest to get some info from our members.

I don't know man, but its funny how crappy all these new consoles are. They fall apart all the time for various reasons (or no reason at all). Yet my NES from 1986 still works if I smack it hard enough and blow into the game enough that I turn blue and see stars. Trust me that NES has been through hell, and IT STILL WORKS! Yet I've been through 3 PS2s....
