The subject line may be misleading, I guess that's not really what I'm asking here.

All I want is to be able to play imports and backups. I don't care about any other features. Well, I do care about safety features and what-not. I mean, I don't want it catching on fire.

So, is there any compelling reason not to just spend twenty bucks for something like a Magic 3.1+? People on this forum talk about three specific big-name chips, but these people care about features, and I don't.

If it clarifies, I'm not worried about soldering either. I'm confident in my ability to solder.

EDIT: I have a v7, so I know it's the right chip :P

If you want a Magic 3.1+ then get one. The only compelling reason I suppose, is the sites that sell the fake Magic 3.1+ chips. Here's the official site so you can check out the official resellers.

The reason most people get good chips is the features, but
if you are going to get one why not get a good one?
One perfect example is that good chips (DMS4,Matrix Infinity)
have flash upgrades. Which means at least once a year you can get you chip updated to the latest features. For example when games on
dual layer (DVD9) became more popular, if you had a regular chip that could not be upgraded you were just out of luck unless you went through the process of shrinking it to fit on DVD5.
The good chips just figured out a way to solve that, released an
upgrade you download for free, and made it so your chip would be able to play DVD9 back ups so that you did not have to cut things out and shrink it.
I agree that most of the features like hard drive support you may never even use. But the free upgrades are a great piece of mind to have. Like the next release for DMS4 is to have an integrated cheat system right on the chip so there is no need to own a gameshark or AR Max disc.

You never know what they will come out with next that your chip will never be able to play, unless of course it has flash upgrades.

that is just my 2 cents.

I hope i'm not too late but, magic3.1 is the last thing you wanna get for your V7. The combo of the v7/magic3.1 doesn't work properly for double check games. If you don't want the mods with all the extra features then I'd recommend getting a DUO2SE.

I agree, i have heard good things about the Duo2SE chip.
But i still say DMS4 Pro or Lite, or the Matrix Infinity.
I do not know if they are made by the same people but i have
a DuoX2 in my Xbox and it works great.

Not sure what double-check games are, but the search function is a click away here. Looks like that Magic chip is out-of-print anyway, and I'm not spending $50 for the upgrade. Perhaps the Mars MA-501 (typed that name from memory..) will suit my needs better. Primarily, my $20 needs!
