I have burned over 100 movies and I like to buy quality media such as Taiyo Yuden.

I always burn the movies slow (4x) to reduce the chance of burning coasters.

So, since I always burn at 4X, and since one of the pieces of equipemnt that I will use (my dvd recorder) says to use disks marked 2x or 4x, should I only buy 4X or is there any benefit to buying 8x disks?

I am not sure whether the dvd recorder can view disks burned at 8x or whether the owners manual was talking about only using 4x discs when I burn using the dvd recorder.

Anyway, the 4x disks are almost always cheaper, so unless you guys tell me why I should buy 8x, I think that I should just buy bulk quantities of 4x.

I alway buy 8x media as well and burn at 4x too. I have read at this forum that you should burn at 1/2 the speed of the rated media. So a 4x media you would burn at 2x.

I think I'll stick with 8x. Follow the sales and you can get it for less and .40 cents a disc, sometimes as low as .25.

Cheers.

snorkel- asssuming your buying quality media - Taiyo Yueden , Verbatim, Ritek -ect... speed that the media is rated for is a minor issue ! As to why you should buy 8X media when everyone recommends burning at 4X or posibly lower ? Well if your buying branded media locally say @ BESTBUY ,COMPUSA, CircuitCity, OFFICEDEPOT, Staples ect... You will probably find it hard to find 4x media ! Because most of the Major brands selling media are concentrating on producing 8x or 16x media ! so it may just be a convienience for you to buy 8x media instead of 4X ! That being said you can find excellent deals on Taiyo yudens 4X dvd media online for just that reason ! and if the price is agreeable to you there is absolutely nothing wrong with that logic !Taiyo yuden is trying to clear out their backstock of 4X so they can sell more 8 X & higher ! but their is nothing wrong with the 4x media ! Upgrading to a higher speed media just gives you more options ! You can burn at the rated speed ! higher than rated (with some media & some burners) or lower than the rated speed ! Indeed even with the excellent 4x Taiyo Yudens you can burn @ 8x on some drives ! That being said ! I usually burn @ 4x for video/dvd backups anyways ! I have experimented with speeds up to 12x using fuji-japan media and had no problems ! I even copied that backup with no problems but I have decided to follow the wisdom of a vast majority of the afterdawn.com intelligentsia != ( All the smart people) and almost to a man or woman they burn@ 4x as their highest speed ! Think about this Dvd Recorders use basically the same technology as dvd Burners But they only burn @ 2.4x atleast most do ! same reason also burning at 4x or maybe lower may increase playability on older dvd players ! In the end it's pays your money & take your pick ! hope this was helpful atleast somewhat ! Good Luck , Happy Burning & Happy Holidays !CIAO!

@snorkel

i have never ONCE burned my 4x TYG01s DVD-R Taiyo Yudens BELOW 4x...i have THOUSANDS of flawless backups using these...while both 9mm and bigtoxy are CORRECT in that MOST people u read from on here will RECOMMEND burning media at 1/2 the rated speed, depending on your PERSONAL setup...it is not 100% the case...

i've ALWAYS burned my 4x DVD-R TYs @4x, and i've also burned my 8x DVD-R @8x too~ yes, i am NOT THE NORM on here, but i can pretty much SAFELY SAY, i have more experience with Taiyo Yuden media than ANYONE you will ever meet on here~ :)

while i do NOT disagree with 9mm and bigtoxy, the "recommended/safe" way of burning dvd video IS usually @4x on whatever rated speed media...this is a good "general rule of thumb", but IF your setup/burner/Taiyo Yuden media can handle it and is "up to par"...then burn 4x rated @4x, 8x rated @8x...16x media, even I slow this one down to 8x, but that's NOT to say i don't have some good burns burning @16x...that is just pushing the bar a LITTLE too much for my own good~ :)

so, please consider my advice when using Taiyo Yuden, it really is NOT necessary to burn a 4x rated TY @ 2x, hell, i don't even burn my dvd+DL discs @2x ~and those are MUCH riskier in terms of $$ spent to get a "coaster" after burning...

do what i did, LOAD UP on the 4x DVD-R Taiyo Yudens (TYG01s) and burn them @4x (it IS easier on your wallet too)...get them while they are STILL around, they discontinued production earlier this year..so, they will NOT be making ANY more in the future~ it's 8x and 16x dvd-r/dvd+r for Taiyo Yuden at present time~ :)

i'm not saying to "do what i say," keep your burns @ 4x for less chance of errors on your 8x media...but, if you have a recent drive (such as the Benq 1640 that i got few months ago), you will see FOR YOURSELF that the scans are actually BETTER if you burn faster~! no joke~ im not making this up...i have LONG forgotten and never really abided to the "general rule" here on AD of burning EVERYTHING @4x, it just doesn't "float my boat" and i will never do it as long as i have Taiyo Yudens~

docTY~

p.s. DO NOT OVERBURN your rated media though, meaning...4x rated @8x or 8x rated @16x...this WILL give you horrible scans in quality, i've tried it, so i know from first hand experience...keep burns @ rated speed or under if you must...never over the rated speed~

Yeah ... what Doc said ..

I always burn movies at the rated speed .. However, I do ocerburn 'slide show' DVDs with great results

The only time that I'd recommend burning at less than rated speed is if you're using crapola media or have a crapola burner ... period

Snorkel: I personally think the 8x speed rated media is a heck of a lot better quality than the older 4x speed. Both my benq 1620s and my cyberhome tv burner tell me that with the very few coasters they now produce. This goes with the quality stuff and the crappy 8x speed cmags.I still keep the burn at 4x and 8x because 2.4x gives me the most problems.

Not so fortunant with the 4x speed of sony/maxell/memosux/verbatim 4x speed. I had a heck of a lot more coasters with those last year.

4x speed media around my way is getting very hard to find.I try sticking with the plus format of japanese sony/fuji/maxell/and verbatim in the 8x speed. Lots of tys are in those japanese fuji and sony.Hitachi on the japanese maxell +8x,as apposed to ricohjpn on the +4x maxells.Ritek made maxells and Office Depot 8x are also excellent.

I have yet to have a burn coaster this year on 8x media with all 3 of my benqs and cyberhome recorder. The only 1 I had was a dash 4x verbatim digital movie quality disc last january. I have had a few bad discs and playback coasters.About a dozen out of 1500+ burns. Still have over a 99%+ success rate on the 8x speed including cmags.

Price difference?
I've been seeing verbatim 16x media going for 30 cents each as well as fuji yudens for 30 cents each when on sale.

This 8x speed media is sweet! Try to give them a chance. The 4x speed won't be around much longer.

I agree with all who would say 8x quality media is their choice speed. I like 4x too, but like someone here said there are not as readily available at your local retailer for purchase. I see many brands transitioning to 16x (Yikes). As many know here I swear by SONY 8x DVD-R's and you will too "Trust Me" SONY is more than just a brand name. I would not suggest that you purchase them at regular price as they often out price any brand in the store. Catch them on sale and you will be hooked. As I say "Just press play" The best blank media available. I promise you will be impressed. They are currently on sale at your local "Circuit City" $8.99 for a 25 disc spindle. I purchased 125 disc for for an unheard of 46.00 bucks. I'm talking about quality blank media that normally sells for $79.00 for a 100 disc spindle. Believe the hype. Purchase these blank DVD disc then talk to me.:)
