I've been using DVD Shrink with AnyDVD, then re-authoring and backing up the Main Movie only.

I have had great results so far with most movies fitting on a 4.7gb disc without any compression at all which I prefer.

I need some guidance on compression because even backing up the main movie only with a few films needs some form of squeezing.

How far can a movie be compressed before it becomes obvious in playback say on a larger LCD?

At what rate of compression will fast action pixelate etc?

The first movie i've backed up needing compression is Mr & Mrs Smith and with DVDShrink on Automatic Compression it says 89.5% which is 10.5% compression, is this rate ok?

Thanks Everyone.

I would say that would be better than average. I have backed up some with as much as 35% compression and they looked fine on my 7 year old 32" JVC.

Since you are using single layer discs to backup to, why not play with the compressions to see what is acceptable to you. SL discs are only 30-60 cents each so it wouldnt be an expensive experiment.

Thanks LOCOENG, i'm gonna burn a few compressed movies soon.

I'm after personal experiences of compressed movie playback to see how far a movie can be compressed without visable loss of quality(i'm a quality addict).

Once again Thanks

Personally I wouldn't go below 30% compression and that is probably a widely accepted ratio, but different setups can tolerate different levels. That's why I suggested the testing, my experiences might be different than yours.

I think it also depends on what you are compressing. I compressed The Sopranos and they looked fine on my 52 inch, but then I compressed 21 Jump Street which was an older series and it looked wicked. Newer video seems to be able to handle the compression better.

When there is(are) compressions needed, you can try the following.

Thanks guys for your help.

I backed up Mr & Mrs Smith yesterday using DVD Shrink, Deep Analysis, 11% Compression and AEC(Default Sharpness).

I will watch it later.

Again Thankyou.
