I have used DVD Decrypter and DVDshrink in the past to make backups of encrypted DVD's. This time I'm trying to make a copy of an unencrypted DVD of my son's hockey game to send it to his grandparents to watch because they are getting older and can't go to the games. The orignal "tape" was done by a local Mom & Pop TV Station which was broadcast on TV and copied by a hockey parent on a VHS tape. It was then given to one of their friends who then copied it to a Sony DVD-R ver. 2.0/1X-8X labeled as being a 4.7 GB DVD.

I'm just merely trying to copy the unencrypted Sony DVD-R to a DVD+R which is all my DVD burner will do on my computer. I have tried DVDshrink and also tried using DVD Decrypter, but keep getting errors and it will not proceed. The original DVD has the following folders and files on it: By the way, SONATA appears to be what the DVD was labeled as when it was originally copied from VHS tape to the DVD-R.

Folder VIDEO_RM
Files: SONATA.IFO
VIDEO_RM.BUP
VIDEO_RM.IFO
SONATA_DEBUG.IFO
VIDEO_RM.DAT

Folder VIDEO_TS
Files: Default.PLS
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB
VTS_01_5.VOB

I really don't know what the problem is and I should be able to just copy it "out right," I would think. However, I'm no expert, and hence, I'm asking for some help from all the knowledgeable people on this forum.

Thnak you very much,
Tom Carlson

It might be the drive that you are reading with does not like the media.
I have run into problems burning on the fly (D.A.O.) with combo drives. Even with good -R media.
I also ran into problems with a BenQ DVD-Rom drive with -R media.
All of the drives would read DVDs fine when doing backups of originals. When it came to burning DAO with -R media, I would get problems (Errors/coasters).
Have you tried running it through DVD Shrink, like it was an original?
You can try researching your "Drive" for a newer firmware.
An updated firmware may resolve this issue.
Look up your drive model # here:
http://forum.rpc1.com/dl_firmware.php?download_id=318

Another issue can be your burning sodtware. Make sure you have all the updates for that.
Drive manufacturers usually have a website that will tell you all the media and burning softwares that are most compatible with their drives

I have never ever had a problem with a Lite-On DVD-Rom drive

I've had problems in the past trying to copy a DVD-R to a DVD+R disc. I think what you need to do is rip the disc with DVD Decrypter in .iso read mode to your hard drive. Then burn the image with DVD Decrypter in .iso write mode to a -R disc.

There is no reason to use DVD Shrink since the original is already on a DVD5. You should be able to use DVD Decrypter iso read mode to rip the DVD-R then use DVD Decrypter iso write mode to burn the iso to a DVD+R.

Thanks very much for all (kickbak, catfreak, and Mort81) your advice. However, I have used DVD Decrypter and I have also used DVD Shrink as if it was an original. That's what has precisely got me totally baffled????? Perhaps I'll give them both a try and see if I have some luckwith it again by chance.

(I can't begin to tell all of you how much I appreciate your quick response time. When I was first learning how to use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, I posted several messages to this forum and had the same kind of excellent response from a couple of other guys. One was from Australia and the other was real interested in motocross racing.)

It's getting late here where I live in EST in the USA, so I won't try ripping and burning again tonight (this morning), but will try again after the sun comes up!

Lastly, I tried a new program (for me at least) called 1Click DVD Copy 4.2, but it didn't work either. I did have to leave while it was working with the original dvd, and then I couldn't see the "window" telling me what to do next or if it was done. Next time I use it, I'll make sure I'm here for the whole thing from start to finish.

Thanks to all of you again,
TRC
