I just got the 740a and I think its a very good burner. My problems are trying to back up my ps2 games.I have used Ritek g05,fuji,and Maxell (Japan) All are -R.The Riteks wont even boot up sometimes and the fuji and riteks freeze alot. What is the best and proven -R media to use in this burner??
Taiyo Yuden~ :) LOL...i have the Benq 1640, which is actually what THIS Plextor you got is a "rebadged" counterpart of...it LOVES TY media, in either format actually~ :)
also, since i don't use Verbatim DVD-R format, this drive ALSO LOVES Verbatim in the 8x/16x DVD+R format (MCC003/MCC004) <~media ID coding~ ALL the ones i use under the Verbatim brand are ALL MADE IN TAIWAN (for single layer discs) and MADE IN SINGAPORE (for the DL discs under the Verbatim brand)
give either or a try, best of luck..and for burning GAMES, this is ONE occassion where i would recommend burning S-L-O-W~ :)
Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

I am always prepared to recognize that there can be two points of view - mine and one that is probably wrong - John Gorton
I also have the benq 1640,and just like both my 1620s- I don't even bother with the dash format anymore!
For these benqs and the rebadged benqs like the plextor 740,you've got to use the plus format and booktype them to dvd rom using the program called q-suite. That'll take care of those no disc inserted errors.
Mine love Fuji/sony yuden000T02 from the japanese spindles/ritek-r03/maxell002-00/verbatim Mcc-003/004.
