Hi...I still have a thread going on the advanced group, but that one has spiraled into deeper issues so I thought I'd go back to basics and re-try a few of the questions originated from the more recent posts to that thread.
The problem? Upon playback disc will pause (video only) briefly while the sound keeps steady, then video has to speed up briefly to catch up. This happens maybe every 15-20 minutes or so throughout the movie. Most interestingly, when it happens I can shuttle backwards over the bad part and re-play it and it plays fine about half the time. It is entirely inconsistent. I started using DVDxCopy then switched to CloneDVD (while using AnyDVD the whole time. I've used Sony and Fuji media. I've played back on Panasonic and Toshiba players. When I switched from 4x speed to 2x speed, the problem seems to have corrected itself on the Panasonic but not the Toshipa (naturally, our primary DVD player). My question is...where are the constant variables? If it's the burner, why is it only on a handful of titles that it does this on? If it's the media, why can I go back over the same part and it plays fine the next time? If it's the player why would other movies burned onto the same media do fine and why would the record speed of the burn make a difference? This is almost like a CSI case! :)
Also...following along the lines of a potential burner issue (but again...why only a fraction are bad?) what is the normal life expectancy of a burner? At what point do I think it's burned it's fair share and it's time to be replaced?
Thanks so much for any help!

Sounds like the disc is dirty, that's what happens to me when I have a dirty disc. I would have said dirty lense in your players but you tried it on 2, but couldn't hurt to try it on a 3rd. Is your fuji and sony MIJ?

That certainly sounds like a good theory...and it DOES play ok on my laptop (which unfortunately isn't so great for family viewing). However, as far as the other options are concerned, I already used the spray cleaner from Blockbuster on it (although being brand new there weren't any visible specks) so it should be clean as could be. The DVD players are another story...is there a product or method for cleaning those? Finally...what does MIJ stand for? Thanks!

one more thing I just thought of...any pros/cons to using the same drive for reading/writing vs loading the read and loading the write drive at the same time and having it go seamlessly from one to the other? I kinda like that feature in CloneDVD but had in my mind it wasn't good to do that. I've experimented with both a bit and haven't seen any differences but was curious if anyone else had?

hi
if i read you correctly? when dropped to 2x it helped on 1 player, tell me is the films that are problematic had *heavy compression* used to fit to a dvdr 5 4.38 gig size???
Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Are you asking of heavy compression was used in making the original or in making the problematic burns? If it's the former, I don't know how to tell that for sure. If it's the latter, yes and no. I tried backing up Mommie Dearest which did require a good deal of compression to get on one disc, but Polar in simple mode (or using one titleset in CloneDVD easily fit within the 4.35 we have to work with...so there shouldn't have been any compression on my end. Thanks!

@ecarlson,
Had about the same problem and almost put me over the edge LOL.
I had similar problems with burns and playbacks. One would work great, the next went to pieces?
Finally figured out that it was a flaky IDE cable to my burners. Changed it and all was cured?
May not be that simple for you but it?s worth a try.. Cables are cheap and most ppl have many extras that came with new drives..

MIJ means Made in Japan, MIJ media is better than most, excluding Verbs. If a Sony or Fuji is MIJ then that means it's been by Taiyo Yuden, which is one of the best manufacturers out there.
It doesn't matter if you use 2 drives or 1 having to switch back and forth, I use 2 and have absolutly no complaints.
I really can't add on to what oldgeek said b/c I'v never had a prob w/ my IDEs. But you should definitly try that if nothing else works.

I don't believe that, I mean you can buy a 20 dollar DVD player at Kmart, that's all BS. I could use the money in my wallet right now and buy a low line, no name DVD player. IF all you need it to do is watch some DVDs you won't need a really good DVD player, and your really paying for the brand.

2OldGeek...
That's an intereting theory about the cables...and at this point any possibility is worth following up on! I don't suppose there's a way to check the condition of the cables without just replacing them? Then again...I'm leaning heavily towards getting a Ben Q drive that will surely come with its own set...so hopefully the new cables and/or the new drive will do the trick. I just can't imagine the source of a problem that only happens approx. 3 out of 10 times when watching a scene...but at the same scene(s) each time it happens. If you find my mind somewhere, let me know. :)

It could also have been a blurb in the origonal press. I have gotten some of the movies that are the lower priced units at Wal-mart that have been less than perfect right out of the box. They would have a blurb at one spot in the movie that would cause player fluctuation. This could be the issue as well. Those re-presses are not usually top of the line in the first place.
Just a thought.

Was just a ?Try it and see? suggestion. As I said, cables are cheap and it cured all my problems that had me pulling what little hair I have left out. LOL
If that ain?t it then???.Try sumpin else.
Usually disks with Blurbs won't rip to start with, CRC errors, etc.

How do I determine the dye info? I've now tried Fuji MIJ, Fuji MIT, and Sony MIJ as far as media. I, too, was wondering about something with the original, but surely Polar Express wouldn't have had a blurb as it was a brand new? Were you referring to the bargain bin at Wal-Mart or do they sometimes make even the new movies on bad discs? Thanks!

I was refering to the bargin bin a wallys, and those $7.95 editions that they have one they start reducing the price on the new movies. I have had success ripping those but sometimes they have a blurb that carries over to the backup. Not always, sometimes.
I'm not sure about your other question as to whether you can identify the dye that is used or not. Have you tried DVDidentifier or DVDinfopro to check the discs? The Fuji (MIJ) and the Sony(MIJ) should be great media. Ask the question in the media forum. Someone will have the answers regarding media there.
