I delete mine, it will not cause a problem. Remember to defrag the hard drive often. I do mine every week. It suprized me just how fragmented burning movies leave a hard drive. Before learning to do backups I only had to defrag about every 6 months.

this may be a dumb question, but why should i defrag my hard drive? all of you guys say to do it, and then there are people that tell me not to bother? oh and for what it's worth, i deleted the old movie files and gained about 35GB back to my hard drive! thanks, as always my new homies!

Yeah, ripped DVDs take up a lot of space, so you're better off deleting them once you're finished backing them up.

@TCEagle

Regarding the why of defragging you hard drive...think of it as a deck of cards. When you first open a brand new deck all of the cards are sorted and grouped by suits and in order. After you shuffle the deck everything is mixed up. Say you want to find the 10 of diamonds, you will have to search through the whole deck to find it, but if they were sorted out it would be relatively easy to find.

When you put data on your HD it is stored here and there and everywhere (fragmented), when you defrag your drive all of the data is sorted and put into a logical order. I don't think I have ever heard anyone say not to defrag, and if you are concerned about time then do it when you go to bed or schedule it to run at a time you aren't using your PC.

..what LOCOENG said :)

..defragmenting 'fairly' requently is essential for a PC to run nicely (ie so the hard disc's heads don't have to do extra work fighting with bits of files scattered everywhere), but for dvd burning you want to make the burn as smooth and troublefree as possible, so it's good practice to defrag every know and then so the huge DVD files are in 'contiguous' sections of the hard disc, ie the hard drive can just stream data to the blank dvd instead of fighting it's way around the files if bits are scattered all around the place

thanks everyone,
the deck of cards analogy made sense. i should have checked the thread last night before i decided to defrag, i started at 8pm last night and i think it is still going! first defrag on a machine that is 2 years old... i can only imagine how messed up it is!

sorry i am new at this!

Yeah, if that's your first, and you have a large hd it will take some time.

Mine takes about an hour a week and I do it regular.

Cheers and happy burning.

@LOCOENG

Great analogy!
