Greetings and Happy Holidays all...

I just caught a sale on Verbatime DVD-R 16X at OfficeMax ...$15 for 50. I bought 150 of the suckers. So I go to try the back-ups I made and the 3 discs I did are all messed up. They keep frgmenting every 30 seconds or so. Man I am ticked. I was always told Verbatim's were the way to go. Any idea what might be causing it? I used DVD Decryptor and Nero Recode 2. I am now going to try DVD Shrink and see what happens.

FIRMWARE, you all need to update your firmware for your particular drives and everything will fall into place...

once again, there is a GOOD chance that your issues with "coasters" are due to your FIRMWARE...make sure it's updated for your burner...this is VERY VERY important in successfully burning these newer 16x rated media...

it does not take a long time to do and is fairly easy to accomplish, thus teaching ur drive to recognize and properly burn to these 16x rated discs...

no need to repeat myself...FIRMWARE is the usual culprit for 16x rated disc coasters...and IF your firmware is up to date, then we need to go further into seeing HOW you are burning and at WHAT SPEED the burn is at...etc..etc...

but, it ALL starts with FIRMWARE.

Yes, it is the Firmware, unfortunately it seems my burners
firmware is no longer being updated.
(Memorex 3202-3286, BWSE firmware)
Is there some way to adjust the firmware and
add the info for these disks? My drive wont even
indicate they are in it so I cant find their media
code blocks. Can anybody help with this? Keeping in
mind that I did already download the latest Firmware.

Just now,

the results I have on nero (scan) for Verbatim Printables dvd+r x16 adv azo, bitsetting dvd-rom (MCC04, 84-95)

are being soundly beaten by Maxell dvd-r (Ritek G05, 97-98 score).

This is on a benq DW1640 with latest firmware both burned at x4.

Though the quality of some Ritek media has a wider variance I've always found Maxell's to have consistently low PI failures.

Still to try Taiyo Yuden tho.

@ashj

if you are using a Benq 1640 to burn with, i would DEFINITELY ditch the idea of keeping all your burns @ 4x...

THIS IS ONE DRIVE that will give you better results burning faster than the usual "4x norm" :)

while i've had this drive only for a few months, i've already put close to 100 burns on it, this is nothing compared to my buddy catfreak who recommended the drive to me...but, both him and i agree that with THIS drive, burn @ rated speed on the 8x media...and the MCC004 16x rated Verbs, i PERSONALLY keep my burns @ 8x, but i know MANY others who have the Benq 1640 that do get outstanding results @ faster speeds...

i have my computers set up to burn EVERYTHING i have @8x, so, i don't bother switching/changing settings around, that's just ME and my own setup, everyone has their own setup and opinions.... 8x burn speeds works THE BEST for ME after thousands of burns later....

@doc

dam that goes against all previous thought process , I really need to try that out and get back to you.

Got quite a few back ups on my hard drive for burning, so will do these at x8.

The benq 1640 is an excellent drive imo, pity burning and alcohol don't mix at this moment ;0

(alcohol not to be confused with alkohol :P)

I'll also confirm this MCC-004 media in the benq 1640. The 8x and 12x burns scan far better than the 4x burns.The 2.4x burns will have too many crc read errors.

Here's a 4x scan of MCC-004 verbatim +r 16x:

Here's a scan at 12x on the same MCC-004:

Did someone happen to mention anything about updating the burner's firmware? LOL
