I am a videographer by profession and I have to provide the best DVD money can buy for my clients. I?ve tried almost all name brand DVDs in the market. But I always get a call from one or two clients that they are having problems viewing the DVDs on there home DVD player but it is seems to be alright when they view it on their home computer. Can anyone suggest a good blank DVDs?

I personally consider TY (Taiyo Yuden) +R discs the best, but some will argue that the high end Verbatims (with metal AZO) are better. You should be fine with either one.

It may be that the problem is actually media type instead of quality. In other words the player may not like either +R or -R, whichever you're using. The best way to avoid this is to use +R discs and bitset them (make them tell the player they're DVD-ROM discs instead of recordables). That's supposed to make the discs 100% compatible with standalone players, and I have yet to see any evidence it doesn't.

I'm moving this to the media forum so you can get more response to it

For maximum quality and compatibility, I agree wholeheartedly with vurbal on the +R TY booktyped/bitset to DVD-ROM... It doesn't get any better than that...

I am now a commited convert to the use of decent media (thank you folks).

By chance, I found in my local cheap cheap shop (Trago Mills for those in the South West UK) Verbabim DVD-R 8x TY's at £6.99 a 25 cake. Probably the best product they have in the building :P

Thats by far the cheapest I can find them, even online. Anyone let me know anywhere else to get them that cheap in case they run out?

@kafiend -

Verb TY's - what an excellent choice. :)

try www.svp.co.uk, you can order anything up to 10kg for a flat shipping fee of £4.99, so all you have to do is buy enough stuff to make the postage worthwhile. Plus if you have a problem with something, they will collect stuff at THEIR expense, can't say fairer than that.

at the moment the Verb TY are just £6.70 for tubs of 25. can't grumble

I prefer Verbatim and Sony -R 8x, The most reliable and available in my opinion. Both brands profess to a premium product. Either one, does just fine (consistent quality).:P

I'm pretty new to media...was just wondering what (Metal AZO) is, and what's the difference between, Verb TY's, and the reg Verbs...(I thought the Verbs, were already TY's =/)

Metal Azo is Verbatim's proprietary name/dye/technology used in their dvd media...it's highly regarded as one of the best dye's used at this point in dvds...Taiyo Yuden also use an "AZO" dye in their media as well, different companies call it different "names" but it's very similar in terms of what is actually USED...meaning, the AZO dye~ you'll see "advanced azo" too in the verbatim label~ :)

the "difference" between the Verb TY's and the reg. Verbs is that 2 separate companies actually PRODUCE/MANUFACTURE the media you are inquiring about...Taiyo Yuden makes the Verb TY's media, meaning, TY produces it in Japan, but Verbatim sells it under THEIR "name brand" label~ :) the "regular Verbs" are made by Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp. or "MCC" and these are made in taiwan~ :)

hope that clears up your confusion...when you said, "i thought the Verbs were already TYs"...that is false UNLESS you specifically buy the Verb TYs that are available over in the UK, but not here on U.S. soil...the Verbs over here are MCC coded, made in taiwan by Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp; not in japan, which is where the Verb TYs are made by Taiyo Yuden~

hope i didn't make it more confusing than it already is...

it's just a matter of distribution, different countries have different media available to it's consumers, in this particular case, the UK residents are "lucky" to have them while US customers can get either GENUINE Taiyo Yuden (unbranded silver shiny/inkjet printables in either white or silver) from online retailers OR the MCC coded Verbatims locally and online as well~ :) for the Verb TYs to eventually become available for US (meaning United States consumers) that is a big speculation, it MIGHT happen someday, it MIGHT not~ who knows? hehehe

It appears my friends that The Taiyo Yuden Made Verbatims are Somewhat like the Story about Blue Food ! By Comedian George Carlin ! " Hey like why isn't there any blue fooD? well okay Blueberries maybe , a mint maybe a sour ball candy ! Ouch ! that ain't a sourball that's a damn! marble LOL! Blue food must be something extremely rare with strange magical powers - Maybe it bestows eternal life ? Where's the Blue Food ? we want The Blue Food ! Maybe The Taiyo Yuden Made Verbatims Are Like that ? Maybe not ? But for most of us outside the UK they apparently are ! Go get 'Em Creaky ! " WE WANT THE BLUE FOOD" CIAO!

nope, they're not in the states yet (don't know if you'll even get them at all). over here in UK we can't get them for love nor money. We did have some new-fangled Panasonic TY over here but can't get them either (i didn't even get a look-in on any of those). i've used 'normal' TY before but i just don't like the shiny top of the discs, they get very grubby even with careful handling and clean hands :)

i can't help you re printing on discs etc, i'm only into using a sharpie to write on them so know very little about printing on them or stuff like that. as to 16x discs i'd only used a tub of them (MCC004 i think they were) on my previous burner with 100% success, and the 500 MCC004 discs i've just bought i guess i'll use at 8x quite happily. i dunno if there'll be any quality difference in 16x discs over 8x personally
