Am I the only person who has this kind of problem?
I find a brand that is reasonably priced that works for me. I'll go through a spindle or two, then, all of a sudden they quit working for me.
I used to by Maxell from Wal-mart.. They were convient and they worked. I finally skipped the 25 pack and went to the 50 pack, sure enough, after about 15 disks they quit working.

So I go to Fry's (That place should burn in hell!!!) and I pick up a new spindle... (can't remember which ones off the top of my head but they were name brand)...
You guessed it... the whole spindle is worthless!
What the hell is going on?
Am I in need of a firmware upgrade?

I use a Light-On DVD burner... (slightly older model that only burned 8x with DVD +R media, otherwise it burns at 4x)

When I place one of these disks in my burner my Nero software refuses to "see" the maximum speed... (this is usually defaulted to the maximum speed available for this disk.. usually 8x) Instead it says "Maximum", indicating that Nero could not determine the maximum speed. If I try to burn on these disks it will burn at some rediculously slow speed... (like 2.4x) and then the resulting disk does not play.

I'm at my wits end. I cannot simply go out and buy one of each type of disk until I find one that works... How do these manufacturers get away with this crap? Is Fry's going to take my useless disks back?

I've got about 200 useless disks sitting around my desk because they simply do not work...

Mad as hell...

If you haven't updated your firmware in a while you probably should. I'd start there.

i was there once for media.. they had nothing but crap media.. i asked them for verbatims or sonys... they looked at me like i was joking...

you shouldnt buy anything other than verbatims, sony's, or ty's...

forget everything else..

but yes.. update firmware would be a start..

and maybe some Nero logs... i know some people here would help you on that one...

I agree with the Verbatims and Sonys, if the Sonys are made in Japan, instead of Taiwan. Maxell, Fuji and the Sonys, are all USUALLY great, as long as they were made in Japan. It'll say so on the wrapper somewhere...............
Good luck!

SONY's are the best no matter where they are made (In my opinion). That made in Taiwan caution observed for crapp media does not apply to SONY 8x DVD-R or +R. I say this from experience. I have both made in Japan and Taiwan blank SONY 8x DVD and I have had know that was not related to bad file writing errors again associated with bad media files. On sale this week at COMPUSA $17.99 for a 50 disc spindle DVD-R & +R

Sony media is great media when it has a TY code. Taiwan Sony media is good media and has given myself test scores of 95 to 97 using Nero's CD-DVD Disc Quality tests but it has never given consistent 100% scores like TY media, unless of course the Sony media was Japan TY's. If you disagree and have 100% scores with Taiwan media please post them.

So until then, the ranking will still be TY as #1. <G>

who said Nero logs, i've got bat ears, me :)

...let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

As to media recommendations...i'll just copy/paste one as i just did this 2mins ago on another thread...

and of course i recommend these (best of the 2 breeds) - 'Verbatim TY' -
