I recently bought my first DVD burner (NEC ND-3500A) and I have not had much of a chance to use it. I originally bought a 5 pack of Maxell 4x DVD-R's and a 5 pack of Maxell DVD-RW's.

I copied a DVD that I had and it played fine in my DVD player (Aiwa XD-DVD370). The DVD-RW's are not recognized in my player.

Next I bought a spindle of 15 Maxell 8x DVD-R's. I tride burning a movie and it seemed to work fine. However, when I put it in my DVD player I got a message I have never seen before, "Check Disc", in a big black box with a red border (not the usual graphic for my player). The disc plays fine in my PC both on my burner and Pioneer DVD-ROM.

I began to think, "Maybe DVD media isn't as foolproof as CD's". I haven' had much trouble finding decent CD's that play in all of my players.

I installed DVD identifier and found the Maxell discs were made by Ritek. I bought a 5 pack of Memorex 8x DVD-R's at Wal-Mart just to test and they don't work either. They are CMC (Bad, I know).

I have about 40 hours worth (or more) of home videos that are degrading by the minute on VHS tapes. I need reliable media to transfer them to.

Over at Newegg I see the following:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817130950

A 50pk of Verbaitim 8x DataLife+ DVD-R's, which, according to the stickie in this forum, are appearently made by MCC. Good, right?

Then over at SuperMediaStore there is the following:

http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-4x-dvd-r-media-silver-...

A pack of Taiyo Yuden's for just a few dollars more.

Which one would you recommend? A different pack all together? Opinions would be appreciated.

I have one theory as to why I may be having more trouble with DVD media, though, just a theory. I am coming from a Plextor 24x CD burner which NEVER burned a single coaster. Not one! It didn't matter how cheap the media was that I threw at it.

I realize this NEC burner is no Plextor, in that it does not have as much tolerance for poor quality media. Am I correct?

Hello Hi_Ho , i was just wondering why you are going with dvd-r's all the time , is there any reason? The reason i ask you that is because dvd+r's are a whole lot more compatible with standalones. I to have an NEC dvd burner which is an NEC 3520 and it has been great to me:) there are huge differences dealing with cd burners and dvd burners and cd media and dvd media. if you decide to go with DVD+R media you can booktype it so your standalone dvd player will read it as a dvd rom ... kinda like the dvd's you buy:) do search on this site about booktyping. I think you will need a different firmware on that dvd drive to do that though , just search that out as well, as for media i have had great luck with TY's , Verbatim and Officedepot store brand media as they code out as Ritek media :)you can also go with made in japan sony media but make sure it says made in japan and not taiwan, the same goes for Fuji made in japan only. Also even if you don't booktype your dvd's i think dvd+r's are still a little more compatible with different standalone drives .....hope that helps:) anyone feel free to correct me if you think im wrong? /unjust

I guess I kept going for DVD-R because that's what worked at first. I guess I will try DVD+R.

Thank you all for the responses. I have narrowed it down to two choices:

Verbatim
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817130947

Taiyo Yuden
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817172111

Are there any glaring differences in quality between the two?

@Hi_Ho, both of those brand dvd's are excellent quality:) the only difference is if you want a printable disk and have a printer that prints directly on dvd's go with the Verbs, if not save a few bucks and go with the TY's ....either way you should be fine:) /unjust

Been working too hard... Haven't been posting a lot lately, but I am back to my desk job now...

Back on topic: Maybe they will offer the printables soon. With the deals they usually make on shipping, they could be a good source for those of us on the East Coast who have to wait 5 - 7 days for TY... Have to wait and see. Still rima and supermediastore for me right now...

How is SuperMediaStore's service compare to Newegg. With Newegg my order is usually at my door in 2 or three days total.

r u in California? ALL my orders from supermediastore have been at my door within 2 days~ :) i pay sales tax which usually KILLs deals for me, but it's fast...newegg has shipping center HERE in California as well, so, the time difference won't be much diff. (newegg also collects sales tax, so i pay tax for EITHER store...grrrrrrrrr)

ALL media ships from city of industry for supermediastore in CA...

newegg on the other hand, has 2 major distribution/fulfillment centers, one in California and the other being in New Jersey i believe, depends WHICH one is sending you the product (whichever center has it in stock and ready to ship) and WHERE you live~ :)

that is how you calculate how LONG it will take~

either or...you should get it quickly w/ supermediastore as it's only slightly further north~ :) 3-5 days i would expect if supermediastore ships it quickly after you place the order..hehe

also, sms has a better price for TYs than newegg, also something else to consider...

good luck

The thing I like about Newegg is the fact that they ship the same day and FedEx gets it to me within three days.

UPS on the other hand, is slow. I am dissapointed that Newegg has switched to UPS as their main shipper. I pay extra for FedEx.

well, we all go with what works BEST for us, i agree with you in the UPS/FEDEX debate too, i don't have problems with Fedex, and i have MANY delays/problems w/ UPS here in Los Angeles where i live...

when you DO have the choice, i guess you and i are the same in that we PREfER Fedex over UPS...i too would also pay a little more for Fedex over UPS~ :)
