How do I initialize a dvd-rw disc (can it be locked?)

Basic question, but I can't seem to figure it out.

I bought a dvd recorder and i am trying to initialize a dvd-rw so i can start recording my shows without wasting dvd-r discs. Anyway, i tried 5 separate dvd-rw discs and i can't seem to figure out how to initialize them (I mean I try but it says that the disc is locked) using the dvd recorder.

Can I initialize them using my PC and still have them work on the dvd recorder?

Any tips will be appreciated because i can't seem to figure out how to initialize using either dvd recorder or my pc.

P.S. I have successfully burned dvd-r discs on both my pc and dvd recorder.

snorkel- not knowing which stand-alone DVD recorder you are using I could'nt be super specific in my reply but I think possibly you may have adjusted a setting on your machine to protect( status) for the disc in question and generalizing if your machine is set to protect status for that disc it will not record over it ! If this is what your meaning by initalizing ! May I suggest that if your DVD recorder is a LITEON 5005 you might want to check with afterdawn.com 's resident GURU on this model/subjecT = ( CATFREAK) he's really smart & He's very helpful ! You May want to reread your manual to perhaps you have overlloked a step ! Anyway Good Luck & happy holidays _ Happy Burning!!!!!

thanks for the reply but i figured it out. Well, actually i don't know what the problem was but i gotthings working.

Originally io had bought DVD-RW discs that were rated for 4x speed since that is the max that the dvdrecorder can go according to the manual.

I took a chance and grabbed some other DVD-RW discs (which were only 2X speed) and they worked.

Go figure.

snorkel- possibly a compatability problem ! Many stand alone recorders prefer lower speed media ! but you solved your problem so great going Enjoy !!!!!
