problems with dvddecrypter

I am currently having a problem with burning dvds. I use dvdshrink and dvddecrypter. When I first installed them, these two programs worked flawlessly but about 3 weeks ago, I started having problems with using dvddecrypter getting write errors. I am still able to back up dvds to my hard drive with dvdshrink just fine. But after burning too many coasters, I decided to uninstall dvddecrypter and use NERO. Well guess what, friends, I am now getting the same type of write errors. I am quite put out and am wondering if the afterdawn community can throw out some suggestion as to how I can become a happy and successful burner again. I used a registry cleaner, Jv16 Power Tools' reg cleaner, to remove the junk from my registry. I am wondering if this could have caused the problem. I am thinking of reformating my hard drive to see if that will solve the problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

-Do you have Win XP? Is so, you might be able to try a "System Restore" to see if that solves the issue.
-Do a search on "DMA" and "PIO" to see if your drives have gotten switched from DMA mode to PIO mode. If so, correct this, and see if it solves it.
-Think back to any and all software you may have installed recently (before you first noticed this problem). There are some things which can cause strange conflicts. One example: Roxio has used drivers which can cause DVD burning process to lock up and report "illegal disc" errors, even with high quality media. There are other examples, as well.
-What type of media (brand? specific line? Media Code?) are you using? There have been cases where people used a particular brand / line of media with 100% success for months, with no problem, but then the "label" suddenly decided to switch to a new manufacturer, and those same discs which used to work suddenly ceased to work at all.
Those are the first thoughts that come to my mind...

Sounds to me like either your media is crappy or your drive is bad. Your only getting errors while writing. Try slowing down the write speed and see what happens. I personally never burn higher than 2x sometimes I only burn at 1x with my DL drive. This gives me a 100% burn accuracy rate. Even if your media is crappy such as memorox disks if you slow down the burn rate you will be able to generally use the media with no problems. I would also suggest using RW disks while testing to save you the money.

I agree with bruce999 about using system restore. I used registry first aid on my system and it messed with some of my HP stuff that I needed even after telling it to ignore the crap. That god for system restore.

Hello all,
I have the exact same problem. I tried the system restore to the time when I bought it and nothing. I spoke with HP and they keep trying to make me do a full sytem resore, format everything etc etc, but I dont wanna! Anyways, do you guys have any other suggestions?

What is the brand name, model number, and firmware version of your burner?
Download DVD Identifier (see my sig below for the link) and post the media code for your blank media.
At what speed did you burn the media?
If you used Nero, post the last section of the burn log beginning with your name and the program serial number, but omitting your name and serial number before posting. The path is Program Files -> Ahead -> Nero -> NeroHistory.

Hello,
If I run dvd identifier I get:

but IM using KODAK DVD-R 4.7 gb dvds.
I tried burning it at the maximum speed I think it was 4x but I am not sure

hello again,
I forgot to mention that it still writes cds and DVD-RW, and it still reads but as soon as I pop an DVD-R in there it goes nuts, it doesn't even see the dvd.

try different media it may be cheap nasty discs you are useing!!!
also sometimes on good media you can get firmware upgrades for the drive irself to read discs better? but i would plum for bad discs...
@ Normanl
check your DMA is enabled in device manager!
then follow Bruce999 second paragraph!

Many thanks for all the comments in regard to my thread. I did finally solve my problem and it appears that it was a bad burner. I just got it back Saturday and loaded dvdshrink and dvddecyrpter and my setup is working like a champ. So thanks for all the comments they were most interesting and always educational.

Same here. Well I didn't reinstall yet but the new drive is on the way. Did you get any gratuity from HP for all the time and effort wasted?
I think I spent at least 30hrs on this thing + 300$ for an external drive to do a backup because HP wouldn't send me the new drive unless I did a complete destructive recovery (format my drive).

"A gratuity from HP" now that's pretty funny. However, they did replace my burner without charge and it took a week. Speaking of "a destructive recovery" I did that and when I tried to boot my system up it wouldn't because When I got my Hp a1130n, unlike my first Hp, a 9675c, it didn't come with a set of recovery discs, but required that I burn a set, which I didn't mind, except that when I did the destructive recovery, the discs that I burned wouldn't work, so I had to take the machine back to Compusa and they in turn had to contact Hp who sent a set of discs to Compusa to boot up the system. When I went to get my machine back, I asked if they could get me a set of those recovery discs but was told by the tech that Microsuck wouldn't let me have a copy of them. Which I thought was pretty crappy. I was told by the tech to be sure and burn another set of recovery discs when I got my machine home. I am sure you can see where this is going. Anyway, when I got my machine home and attempted to burn the discs, the system wouldn't let me and when I attempted to use the burner, the door wouldn't open and so back to Compusa I go and the tech finally replaced the burner at last. I get it back again and once again, the system will not allow me to burn a set of recovery discs. Back on the phone to the tech, He informs me I should contact Hp and they can send me a set of recovery discs (I know that none of that makes any sense but that's the way that it works in corporate computer culture.) Anyway, I called Hp's customer service dept and the CSR (after talking to her supervisor) sent me a set of replacement discs. A long story that at this point can not be made short: If your PC manufacture requires that you burn you own recover discs they may or may not work at which point, you're sort of screwed if they don't. I guess, even if the manufacture burns them they could be defective but most likely the equipment they use is bound to be more professional than any home pc that Joe computer consumer uses. sorry Afterdawnians for that long convuluted rant but sometimes a cyberkid just has to vent.
