I am trying to copy a dvd movie through DVD shrink but it seems it takes forever, more than 5 hours!!!
Do you encounter the same problem? It was not like this before.

I installed AnyDVD a couple weeks ago and from that point Shrink is working about half as fast as it used to. I uninstalled AnyDVD and Shrink is still running very slow compared to the way it used to.

I'm having the same problems. Mine used to take 15-17 mins, now they are taking 35-40 minutes. What's dma and how do you enable it?

another contribution to the slowless of the shrink might be ur hd
maybe is all clogged up u ned to defrag ur hd once in a while since u do all these dvd duplication

personally i have this automatically hd defragger, so hd clogging is the last one on my list.

stop hoping, start loving.

Thanks. I already tried that today, with no better results. Although under device 0, my computer says dma if available, and Ultra DMA MODE 4 under current transfer mode, but on device 1, it says DMA if available, but under current transfer mode it says NOT APPLICABLE. I also defrag my computer every couple of days, so that is not a problem. I just recently upgraded the RAM to 1024 from 512 too.

I've heard that if you install more Ram in your computer that Programs like Shrink work faster. Is this true?

I sure haven't found that. Could someone please tell me how to check which programs are running in the background, and how much of my memory that they are taking up. I've been reading that this could be part of my problem, but I don't understand why all of a sudden my shrink times went from 15-17 minutes to 35-40 minutes. I did uprgrade to DVD Shrink 3.2, but the first couple of times I used it I still had good shrink times.

I dont know if it would help but I noticed that the time it takes DVDshrink to finish one DVD (movie) varies. If you're shrinking the movie directly from the dvd, i think it takes longer. But if you'll transfer the movie to your hard drive first (using DVDfab decrypter) shrink time is less. But then of course the time it will take you to transfer the file from dvd to your hard drive (DVDfab) + the time to shrink.. it would seem longer. Another thing is if the disc has more scratches... it also take longer to shrink. Hope it helps.

I have an automatic defragmentor also. about the DMA I have the same showing asbigeasyst. But you are talking in minutes and mine takes hours!!!! I never had this kind of problem before. I regularly use a program to clean up my registry because it seems that it's happening all the time (registry errors). I have 768 MB of ram. I may have a lot of processes open in the back ground that I am not aware of.
Thanks for all the suggestions

Here is a thread that may be of interest on how to free up some system resources:

http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56373

Make sure that you are not multi-tasking as this will definately slow things down. I have noticed that when I use shrink directly from the my dvd drive it is slower than if I have previously ripped the files to the hard drive.

I would be interested in anyones comments regarding the comment by bigeasyst

As my system says this for my hd and DVD-RW.

Make sure you're not using Deep Analysis in DVD Shrink unless it is really needeed. This process takes awhile and is unnecessary in some cases.

Hi all....very cool forum...I am new to this and it is taking me about 2 hours...maybe more from start to finish. I am copying to the hard drive and then using Shrink. I have not checked on my DMA mode settings being that I have just read about this, but everything is going well and I am able to burn perfectly with zero flaws. My question is, is it really normal to take over 2 hrs or so to accomplish this? If it is then I am fine with it, but if there is a legit way to speeed up the process, I would appreciate it. I am not running much in the background at all. I am usisng Deep analysis, yet the guide I obtained from this forum instructs me to.

Any advice or response is appreciated.

Thanks

@BMFlash

My times run approximately 45 to 55 minutes start to finish. I use DVDdecrypter and DVDShrink with AnyDVD running in the backgroud.

With CloneDVD2 my times are pretty consistantly 42 minutes.

Ok...I am using FabDVD, DVDdecrypter, and DVDShrink. Everything works great so far...I caught on pretty quick thanks to a cool set of instructions someone had created on this site. When I get home, I will check to make sure DMA mode is enabled. I recently got an external burner and am running windows XP. Under an hour like you are running sounds more like it. Is there any particular reason I should run AnyDVD in the background or should I stick with my method being it is working fine???

As long as you keep current with DVDFab you should not require AnyDVD.

AnyDVD is the best IMHO though.

I am also using deep analysis, it does take an additional 15-25 min(it varies). What is the deep analysis for?

I had a very similar problem. While running shrink, my speed would be around 5,000 kb/sec. Then, it started running around 1,700 kb/sec, and the time took forever. It definitely had to do with the DMA (direct memory access). When I went into Device Manager and checked the primary and secondary IDE channels, they were set to DMA where applicable, and it said something like DMA-2 or DMA-5. Everything appeared fine, but it was running slow.

To fix this, I deleted the drivers for both primary and secondary controllers. I then rebooted and let windows find the generic drivers. The generic drivers were switched from DMA-5 to DMA-2 (or vice-versa...I forget), and it is now back up to speed. I read that process somewhere else, and I'll be damned if it worked!

@bigeasyst

to find out what programs are running and its memory usage.. bring up windows task manager (ALT+CTRL+DELETE), click on processes tab <<this shows programs that are running and its corresponding mem usage, click on performance tab <<< shows CPU usage.

Goodluck! :)

well,

I went home and made a copy Of Duce Bigalo.....Like I said, I am new to this and I do apologize....My settings in the device manager were already set to DMA, so I did not uninstall. I am wondering if I should like the guy said in the post above me.....Did I mention that I am running an External Liteon USB Burner? DOes this make a difference in regards to where I check for my DMA settings?

Shrink does still take almost an hour, yet I found that my real problem lies in DVD Fab.....It takes over 2 and a half hours to run through the DVD Fab Process. Is this normal...I am using an older PC, but it has always been reliabel with me yet the processor is only a 466 I think and I am running only 384megs of memory( will double check when I get home, (it has been a while since I messed with my PC period).....are these my problems?????I am not running anything else in the background, I have shut everything down via MSCONFIG

Should I double my ram? WIll that actually work?

Thanks in advance

Your processor is definately of old school. This will increase your processing time. Ram upgrade will help, if your MOBO will accept it, but I don't think by that much. A 466mgz processor is a dinosaur. It will get the job done, but slowly.

Thanks for the reply...I think my MBD will accept 512 at the max...I think anyway. SO DVD Fab is taking this long due to my old school PC.

Ok, I just wanted to make sure it was not DVD fab, like a setting or something.

Well, thanks for your respons and I will upgrade my ram.

I have a nice Dell Latitude, but it only has a 10 gig hard drive with only 8 gigs available...I don't think I can pull off ripping a DVD to the hard drive with that. I think I will run out of room.

Thanks

You can get by with 8GB, but your options will be limited. You'll have to start with DVD Shrink to create an ISO that is around 4.3GB. If you start with say DVD Decrypter it will put the whole uncompressed movie to your HDD at around 8GB, so you wouldn't be able to do anything else with it.
