hello and welcome to region free movies for psp 101 im your local part time hacker and freind johnodd4
well let me explain this is great detail i have been researching hacks to break sony's umd region lock on older and newer firmware versions and i did it i broke the umd region lockout this only works on umd disks right now from the uk but im working on a japanese region lockout fix here it is how it works and how well it works
well we all know that firmware updates work by updating the psp firmware to the latest version and latest applications well what if i told you the psp firmware japanese version has a hole a big hole a really large hole still reading after all of this bull anyways the hole works like this
inside the psp firmware there are security packages that are installed
and updated with every firmware update these packages tell the psp what type of umd movie region to use and play for each psp well on firmware 2.00 japanese version it permently writes the region security package to the main movie region package that tells the psp what version it can play once you update to the us version 2.50 then to 2.60 it locks the region info into the psp firmware and allows the u.s firmware 2.60 to play region 2 and 4 incoded movies on the psp
these regions are detecated to psp's in europe
so once you update the psp from japanese firmware 2.00 to 2.50 u.s.a then to u.s.a 2.60 you can watch films from europe
warning:this has been proven to work after all these updates but be carefull this will cause homebrew to no longer function
now why in the **** would you want to do this your asking
simple to play imported movies
from any country

Ok weird. But I have jap 2.0 on my US released PSP so can i do anything special with mine??? I hella want to watch my Advent Children UMD which is jap region ofcourse so i cant watch it but since there is a hole u should hurry and find it so my UMD is not useless.

yea i know im trying to study the hole a little more because there may be another way to also boot homebrew in 2.60 as well if the hole still is there
and if it still works?
you may want to update to 2.60 and try your advent children umd though it may work i have no idea though if it would though because i do not have a japanese umd movie to try this with
but remember you need to update in this order
1. 2.00 japanese firmware
2. 2.50 u.s.a firmware (you may have to download it from another site)
3. 2.60 u.s.a firmware

Ok first off IIRC Japan, South Africa & Europe are ALL REGION 2!! So playing Region 2 on a japanese PSP?, is no big deal. Region 4 is Australia & New Zealand though. =\
I'm not criticizing you as such, This could be an excelent find. Thing is. Who gives a Ratsmaset about overpriced \ underperforming UMD? Movies , that can only ever be used on the S0NY PSP? Platform?!?
You'd think some People haven't ever haerd of PSP-9 or something. Again to / for those People with Outa Region UMD? Movies this could be cool....
Then again you could be a SONY? Troll just out to get some poor unsuspecting noobs to update to Firmware 2.60 too. If it's all the same I just continue to buy the reall deal (i.e. DVD's), and use 'em on the DVD Player, XBOX or PS2. And if need be rip and burn on to that also overpriced SONY MemoryStick?...

yeh seems utterly pointless to me. if you have a umd and it wont play forget it let it collect dust. go out and buy the dvd (i don't actually think anything decent has come out on umd anyways. other than FF:AC and donnie darko. which i have both) or get the movies from another source.
unless you want to completely ruin your changes of playing homebrew on you psp i wouldnt update - its going to be ages until someone fetches out a downgrader for it.
to be honest i think if this guy found a hole (no disrespect here) he wouldn't be f*ing around trying to get a region lock off. he would be trying to get homebrew to play.
so if you did Really find a hole stop F8ing around and have a crack at a downgrader

Screw updating I never said I was gonna. I like my 2.0 which has everything including homebrews plus internet browser. Advent Children aint comin on DVD for a while so I just bought the UMD like months ago cuz I thought it would work wit my jap firm. But it didnt so I downloaded it. Well the point of UMDs is so you can take it anywhere with ur PSP and watch it where ever. If I wanted to watch Advent Children at home I would of just downloaded it and burn it to a DVD(which I did). And actually theres hella good UMDs out right now and for cheap at Fry's like around $12 each like Samurai Champloo,Cowboy Bebop,Akira, and lots more versus the $30+ UMDs found els where. And ofcourse SONY acessory products are overpriced, only retards with money will buy it. I got my Scandisk 1 gig memstick for only $45 versus the SONY one which is like $150. It is only overpriced to ones who do not search for better deals.

Yes but your PSP? is still Region 1 (US\CAN), The PSP? uses the same Codeing System like DVD's (1-6) and is not necessarily tied to the actuall Firmware in use. Japanese Firmware or no.
Besides if I were to come across a half-way decent UMD Movie for something nearing a acceptable price for what it is!!! I'd be myself more accepting of S0NY's Format. As it is FF:AC or no, I would't blow the Dough. on it. I'd rather just get a good deal on a MemoryStick at some Mom&Pop Camera Store that was far, far removed from S0NY's PSP? and there inflated for the Holiday Season Prices.
But, given the only support for UMD's at the moment, are for the PSP? I don't see this Format gaining any legs. Exclusives such as FF:AC again or not. Perhaps S0NY? should start thinking about makeing Portable UMD? (al-la Portable DVD), Players. At least then the format wouldn't be so stigmatized as it is now...
Yes I know the PSP? is a portable UMD? Player that's not what I'm taking about. Basicly if S0NY even want's this format to even get colse to anywhere. they'd best start migrateing this crap away from the PSP? and then market the PSP as haveing that funcunalty as alread built-in.
otherwise this Format will die off as quickly as the PSP itself!!

Dude try spoofee.com there are hella deals on memsticks. Seriuosly i got my 1 gig for $45. And i only own 3 umds and 1 came with the psp(spiderman 2). The umds i own are like my all time favorites. samurai champloo, advent children. i would buy more but im not a big fan of movies just animes(as you can see on my listing of umds on the previous post) But the point is that why take away the UMDs when it is made FOR the PSP. It is kinda pointless to make a portabe DVD al-la UMD since its basiclly the same thing. UMDs are just smaller than DVDs and hold less info for the sole reason that the PSP is smaller than DVD players. So just think of the PSP as a portable DVD player that has smaller DVD's. UMds and DVD's cost pretty much the same anyways. Without UMD's, how els will the PSP play movies???? Besides the memstick which can only hold so much.

first off i beleive in homebrew that is why i placed a warning that says if you update you will no longer be able to use homebrew also thanks for the information on dvd region encoding for psp it helped me to finish my reasearch into this and i am now able to run umd japanese movies from japan on my psp as well yea more anime and porn (just kidding about the porn) and on another note i wouldn't tell anybody to update to 2.60 untill they fix socom 2 and the mess that 2.60 is causeing with it

hey guys. i live in new zealand, i own a region 2 japanese psp, and i have two umd movies (Hellboy R4, and Starship Troopers R1). hellboy plays fine, but starship troopers wont play due to region restrictions. help? or sell the R1 movie? cheers in advance. hit me on orochi22@xtra.co.nz

To remove regons form a dvd is simple, buy the dvd and to make a backup of this disk you must need a dvd drive. obtain a program here.

They are the best website that I know of. I currently use Handbreak for OSX. It usally takes a total of 5 hours to make a MP4 from a dvd. The cool thing with programs like these you can say how big you want the end file size. I have turned a 10 gig dvd movie into 300mgs with no viewing loss of quality (DiVx)
hell if you cant find what you want at that website, just google it.

PQDVD psp movie creator is probably the best in terms of converting to MP4. It doesnt take 5 hours but instead it takes about as long as the length of the movie. And you can also make the final output size to be very small without loosing quality as well. Only bad thing is its $30 but you can download the trial which only allows 5 mins of conversion. I really need to find a way to get the registration key so i dont have to spend $30.

ok the problem is in order to run hellboy and starship troopers you need to have your firmware in this order
japanese firmware 2.00
u.s.a firmware 2.50
u.s.a firmware 2.60
in order to fix the region lockout

kay... after much googling i've yet to find reference/confirm if/how this works... if someone could point me in the right direction, i'd be very greatful
if i understand the last post, i should be able to install a US firmware (2.50 then 2.60) over my JPN 2.0 firmware, and that will allow me to play region 1 UMD on my japanese psp 1000. is this the case or am i confused?
if this in fact true, how do i go about installing these updates? i.e. are there any magic tricks/finagling that would be required outside of a regular update?

Hello all..
Well, johnodd4, I've tried your method to the 't' and no luck...
I live in australia. I bought a psp whilst in bangkok in october this year. I got a white psp that came with version 2.0 firmware.
I had successfully downgraded my psp to firmware 1.5 and had fun messing about with some of the homebrew available.
I have received a UMD video (region 2) for Christmas and have been trying desperately to find a way to get it to play in my psp.
That's how I came to find this forum, with your method.
After searching exhaustively for alternatives, I had given in and decided to try this method:
I updated my psp back to 2.0 (japanese). I then, with heavy heart, updated to 2.5 (usa). I then, with heavier heart, updated to 2.6 (usa). When my psp rebooted (with the movie in the drive) I got the message I've been getting with every other firmware I've tried to watch it on: Quote:
This disc cannot be started. The region code is incorrect.
I now have a video I still cannot watch. I now have a psp that cannot be downgraded (yet), so I can no longer use homebrew. I have no games to play, nor enough money to get any.
I sincerely hope there is a breakthrough for firmware 2.6 in the very near future, and that you are doing all you can to figure out a way to properly unlock the region code.

i dont know anything about hacking or anything about firmware.

i got a japanese psp with firmware 2.01 and got Tron which region 1 will this work for me or do i have to wait until some one cracks the firmware i just wanna watch movies on my psp and will not do this for there is a small chance 2.01 will have a downgrade...

I recently bought a White psp and I(I live in the us) just recently found out about the umd movies region restriction(dont know if i spelled that right) I upgraded to the 2.6 US update and I'm able to jump online and play multiplayer games but I'm hesitant to buy a UMD movie now cause I'm worried that it will not play. If anyone has any more information please let me know.

yeah im going to try that tomorrow I hope i hope it works if not I guess I'll have to try to find a way to get region2 umd movies I've already tried to do that by doing a search and i didn't find too many. It's funny i really never really wanted a psp but when i found out there was a white psp out and I saw what it looked like I had to have one...not knowing i couldn't play movies on it is now kinda bothering me... I'll keep ya posted if this works by tomorrow!!

You can wait for the mod chip or a new crazy downgrade. i was Kicked in the balls as soon as i got my psp and the 1st movie still have 2.01.
Yea if any one got news on the mod chip please me where i can find one ?????????????
