It all depends on your set up. Do you have an HD TV or other high quality format TV? You might one day, so the lower the compression, the better the results will be over a broad range of viewing medium. And when you say 60%, I assume you are saying that the main movie is compressed 40%, should be fine if you are happy with the results. I wouldn't go any lower if it can be helped though.

I personally try not to go below 70% compression, however, sometimes it can't be helped.

For my set up, anything below that, and I can really see the reduction in quality. (I have a high def TV).

@dipset121

Download and try the free version of DVD-RB w/ HC encoder for anything below 70%... I use the Pro version with CCE (HC is just as good, but CCE is faster), and the results are amazing. I view my movies on a 52 inch Widescreen HDTV.

dipset121,
I agree w/ teflonmyk except I use DVD-RB-Pro using HC at 80%. I only have a 42 inch HDTV but the Program is excellent as the price is very cheap for the quality you get. It is not as quick as Shrink but the bigger the TV the more you need Quality. Try it as the price is right-Free for the non-pro version.

I agree with Locoeng and teflonmyk, as it really comes down to the monitor in use...I typically go to 80% on Shrink or Recode 2 and then go to Rebuilder Pro (CCE and HC by Hanks)...on my 55 inch HDTV the results are astonishing...actually I have had several big time compression movies done with Rebuilder and they actually look better than a DL layer full back up. I'm still toying with CCE and HC Hanks as to see which one I feel does a better job, what I'm finding is it goes back to the source material in the beginning...both are excellent (one's free and one is $60.00) I use the Pro version, yet the free version offers HC by Hanks and QuEnc (another great free encoder).
@dipset121, experiment and see what is the threshold before you might need to switch to another prog. to get better results...if you do think in the future of upgrading to a bigger screen then I would suggest Rebuilder/HC Hanks, even CloneDVD 2 and Intercopy 3 provides great quality even with large compression ratios. Both have trial versions...dl and try and see.
