Hi everyone,
Just a quick question. How do you clean DVD R media. I know how to clean regular DVD movies, but since DVD R is burnt using a dye I was wondering how you clean the disks?
Thanks.

i would not recommend any kind of chemical on media..
Quote:
If a disc gets dirty, you can clean them easily with any on-the-market cleaning kits or basic rubbing alcohol. But avoid using abrasives, solvents, or highly acidic cleansers. And use a soft, lint-free cloth, and wipe gently in a straight line from the center of the disc, out. This will avoid any potential scrapes from interrupting with the circular path of the signal.
Quote:
If the surface should become stained or contaminated, gently wipe it off with a soft, dry lint-free cloth; a commercial cleaner or ethyl alcohol. Do not use benzene thinner, anti-static agents or conventional LP record cleaners. Because the disc is written in a spiral track, drives are particularly sensitive to scratches that follow the curve of the disc. For this reason, always wipe in a straight line, from the center of the disc out, in radial fashion. That way, any inadvertent scratches or residue will be perpendicular to the track, causing minimum interference.
i got this from sony !

A light spray of Windex and a soft cloth or eye glass cloth works great -- no scratches, marks or streaks.

DVD media is DVD media no matter if it's from an original disc or a burnt one. The actually burnt in dye part of the disc is sandwiched in the middle of the disc with clear plastic on top and bottom. Unlike CD's which have the dye on the top only. Easy to scratch off with a sharp object.

I just read on another board not usually DVD related that some one rented a DVD and it had something on it that Windex wouldn't take off so he tried Goo Off and it melted the plastic! Lol......now the store wants him to pay for the DVD......oopsie. Be careful what you try.

Actually it's called Goof Off, and yes, that eats plastic like no tomorrow. Pretty strong stuff. Same people make Goo Gone which is more oil based, and is good for taking off glue type messes.

I have a motorcycle, and basically I use the same stuff for my DVD's that I use on my windshield. 3M plastic polish and a couple of different plastic cleaners or polishes. I have had to break out the fine cut rubbing compound on some of them.
