I had 4 movies I wanted to back up today.Serentity,Four Brothers,Island and Forty year old Virgin.
To try to make a long story short, after hours and hours of getting burn error messages and trying all kinds of different things I read about here, I finally tried a different batch of disc. Now I was able to back up all 4 movies using only DVD shrink and Nero. I feel it must have been a bad batch of disc. The question how can I determin this quicker in the future should this happen again?
I have been using the Ridata disc. And I made a interesting obsevation. Both batches came from the same place at the same time and had the same packaging. But. The ones I had a problem with have no number on them or marking of any kind. The ones that did work with out any problem so far have a number .
Does this mean something? Is Ridata a good disc to use. If anyone has some experience or advice on this I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks. Rick6

Could you post a Nero log? It should be under programfiles\Ahead\Nero\Nerohistory. Just the section that failed, the sections are divided by this thing:
====== *** NeroAPI, History File *** ======
remember to edit out your serial # at the top which usually start w/ 1A2.
I have been getting alot of Ridata errors lately so you could try switching. TY, Verbs.

HI I am new to burning and using TDK DVD-R and some write and others just fail. I can't work out what is wrong. Can someone help. Could it be the Disc??? My burner is only 3 weeks old and have copied with it but Nero sends me a message on some burns that it was successful but if I try to use the disc again it still wont burn.

@Rick6
I would recommend a media change to some quality media. Taiyo Yudens, Verbatims, Maxells are the brands that I use mostly. Much better quality and can be obtained for the same price as lower quality media.

Glue Eater I was unable to figure out how to pull up the history on Nero. Also I have burned about 6 or 7 disc with out problems so far, so any history I bring up would have to be prior to those 6 or 7 that went through.
Is there a way to check a new disc for defects prior to burning it?
Thanks.

let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.
You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

Bingo!
First off your Nero is pretty old. Update to current version, it is 6.6.0.18
Quote: Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B>Version: A304 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.3.1.12
Your firmware is also behind. Current version is A306, and can be found here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces
Quote: Physical memory : 511MB (523276kB)

This is not terrible, but you definetely need all the memory that you can muster. Don't multitask and close any unneeded progs.

You are burning to close to the edge of the disc. Set your target size to 4300.

This is Roxio (someone correct me if I'm wrong), and it is known to cause conflicts with Nero.
This is what we needed and then some. You posted about three logs, I think. But no harm no foul, and just for future reference we only need from where you started down to the first one of these that you see:

Well I certainly appreciate your help on this Locoeng.
There are still some serial numbers left on my log .
Could a moderator just deleate that intire log for me please.
I have alredy tried to up date Nero and failed. However that I can likely do at night . However my attempt to update the firmware might be a problem. I alredy went to the sight yesterday and was some what at a lost, to do it. Still I will give it another shot. Would you be able to explain how I can change my target setting to 4300 And why is it bad to burn too close to the edge? Also what is Roxio and can I get rid of it?
Thanks again for all you help. I assume the logs I sent you didn't actually show the times I was having burning errors.Or did it?

YOu can edit your post yourself. Just click on the pencil and notebook thing on the upper right hand corner of your post.
To change how far you write:
In Shrink go to Edit>preferences>and under the first tab>scroll down in box until you get to 'custom'>in box beside it type in 4300.
You will have to be more specific on what that problem is, why can't you update, and what's wrong w/ updating Nero for you.
Get rid of Roxio via roxiozapper, just google it and download then run it and it automatically removes it.

This is something I felt needed to be pointed out. Ritek use to be a fine brand of DVDs, but in the last week or so about half of all the "bad" logs I've read have been Ritek, so try a diff brand of media. I recommend Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Sony and fuji are fine so long as they are made in Japan.

@Rick6 - scrolling theu that logfile was killing my PC. i've edited and left just the last section.
@dolphin2 - i sometimes use that website you linked to, but you ALWAYS have to take the results with a giant-sized pinch of salt as it's answers are from joe public and the answers are 99% crap i'm afraid. In this case from the answers there i can see it is indeed complete crap!.
i can't remember exactly what installs pxhelp20.sys, it's i think part of elby software, i think clonecd or something. Either way pxhelp20.sys is not a problem.
I have it installed on all machines i've got and virtually all Nero logs i've ever been thru (too many) have the pxhelp20.sys. i'd dig out the real details of this driver but it's not necessary as it's not a contributing factor in any Nero log i've ever dealt with

most of this has already been said by the other guys but i've just attacked the whole log anyway...
Quote: Nero API version: 6.3.1.12
- Nero's too old, latest 6.x version is 6.6.0.18, download "update package 1" from here - http://ww2.nero.com/enu/nero-up.php
Quote: Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B>Version: A304

- 4465MB is burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

Yeah, like creaky suggested, lower your burn speed to 4x and use quality media.

@dolphin2 - not your fault, it's those ppl that submit the replies to that site :)
just re-checked my reply as it definitely wasn't worded to make you feel bad. either way, nice find on that link, just be careful of the replies. the correct answer is sometimes in there, it's just wading thru the stupid answers that's tricky :)
i have a better link somewhere., i'll see if i can find it .
edit- nope, can't find it, there is a great website that lists a lot of the processes/drivers etc but i just can't remember what it's called

..just make sure the blank disc is in the drive before you hit 'burn' (well it has to be anyway, for Nero to analyse the disc before the burn. then select the speed..

Quote: This is Roxio (someone correct me if I'm wrong), and it is known to cause conflicts with Nero.
Gracefully corrected...<hanging head in shame>...I usually don't comment on the drivers, and will go back to my old ways(and not commenting on them)LOL
