Mely4fun:
Here's what those maxells should code as according to dvdidentier:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:MXL RG02]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Hitachi Maxell Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [MXL RG02]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
These are the maxell yellowtops. These are made by 4 different manufactures using the dash 4x speed. These are very hard for me to find since they are the older 4x speed.
Mxl-rg02 and Ty-g01 on the japanese spindles/jewel case packs
Ritek-g04 and a few cmags on the taiwanese spindles/jewel packs.
I'll take those yellowtops, made in japan anyday. The tys are very difficult to come by in them, but the hitachi ones are excellent. The riteks are pretty decent, but not the few cmags that were on them.
Sounds like those discs may be separating. I had 1 last year that did separate from the outer edge and ruined the disc-after a successful burn. You could see a big glob of purple and it looked like you were pushing on the lcd screen of a calculator to make that globbiness.LOL Probably a few bad discs.
There is a warranty for maxell media, just not sure if it is worth trying to get those possible bad discs replaced. It may be easier taking back the spindle if sears will take them back.

@ saugmon......... but i don't have a staples here, all i got it best buy, comp usa, circuit city, office max, office depot, and altex!!
all carry the epson...
but the kicker is, at best buy, they have a $50 rebate, a $20 american express card, and double points for reward zone members (which i am) totalling to 26,000 points.... which will get me about 20 bucks back in vouchers... so all in all, i get 90 bucks off, which makes it a tad over a hundred bucks....
the diference is not very much, but a larger photo viewer, a tad bit faster print times, different in appearence, but other then that, cost wise, after deals and rebates, cheaper !!
so its a good deal....
but thanks for the tip... however, i did load up on the verbs office depot had, cleared the shelf this afternoon...

Quote: i am buying that epson stylus r340 from best buy today
So are these printers nice? I use Verbatim Data Life DVD-R from Newegg. They are the shiny ones with no printing on them. I heard in some threads that the label way is bad for DVD's. This printer prints directly, correct?

fatstrat: Yes, the epson stylus photo ink jet printers: R-200/R-220/R-300/R-320and R-340 will print directly on your ink jet printable media. The R-300 series has more bells and whistles, but the 200 series just a fantastic job.
You have several different kinds of ink jet printable media:Full hub-these will be solid white-print right up to about 1 mm to the inner hub/regular-these will print further away from the hub/and shiny inkjet printable-gives a nice effect on your label.Full hubs are my choice.
Your shiny verbs are likely thermal jet printable.Big difference between the thermal and inkjet printables.
These are safer for playback. You don't have to worry about the labels peeling and the glue like you do with the sticker type labels. They do cost more-about 40-70 cents each. The dash format printables seem to be a lot cheaper than the plus.
I just got the basic R-200,but it does a fabulous job on my case covers.I'd like to find some glossier full hub printable Plus format media, mine tends to look dull.
What I love about these printers, the cost of the ink cartridges at private.abacus. I just ordered 3 sets-total of 18 cartridges for $55. One set of cartridges at staples and other stores are $50-$60!!!

What are these new accuCORE Sony dvd's. I picked up 4 spindles at Best Buy and 3 of them are the accuCORE. I was just looking for the made in Japan ones, so I didn't even notice this accuCORE business. I'm just curious as to what it is.

it's just a name Sony gives as a marketing gimmick for their discs, it's nothing special...Sony discs are pretty good quality, i have quite a few of the Taiyo Yuden made 8x DVD+R under the Sony brand, great discs~ :)

kivory666,
My own opinion is that "Accucore" is indeed a gimmick related to the High Quality Dye used in these discs. Epecially the MIJ ones! Yaiyo Yuden made Man! YUDEN00 T02! The DVD+R ones that is. I Love those!
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

hehe, yah, Sony is the master of marketing gimmicks...i like the discs you mentioned too, but, for those in the "know", they ARE manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, with Sony's brand name on them...good stuff~ :)
i have a LOT of Sony products actually, i find them to be pretty good...electronics and gadgets, etc...many people HATE Sony as a company and in general, but, i personally like SOME/MOST of the products they sell in the market~ :) that's just ME~

The real gimmick is believing that there is difference between disc made in Taiwan or Japan as it relates to SONY 8x +R/-R blank media. I purchased two 50 disc spindles or SONY 8X +R MIJ and as usual the +R media is error prone whether it's made in Taiwan or Japan (I say this from experience). The second disc used from the +R MIJ spindle produced movie copy that froze while the made in MIT -R spindle produced the same copy with no trouble. Do understand this can happen with either blank media. Be glad that SONY has a standard that they advertise for quality. It goes a whole lot further than the hearsay bable suggested at times here at the forum. Just think ACCUCORE above all else sets a quality expectation for the customer. read the label and you'll see the difference when you record.
ACCUCORE: ACCuracy COmpatibilty REliability
Wide Compatibility.
(FACT) SONY disc play in most if not all DVD players with no trouble.
Archival Reliabilty
(FACT) Your SONY recorded media will maintain picture and sound quality.
Fast Addressing
(FACT) Cheap media tends to fish for start. Giving the the constant shreeking before initializing. SONY DVD media doesn't, just press play.
Stable Writing.
(FACT) I have had no disc related read errors with SONY media that were not file related. i.e. "Burn Process Failed" Does not mean you can not get a bad disc.
Temperature Adaptability
I have yet to experience any heat or cold related trouble with any DVD recorded media.
Name another blank DVD media brand name besides SONY that asked you to trust in there product and list on it's label what you can expect in terms of quality. (This does not include the typical explaination of how the blank disc can be use while recording).
To sit back and pick appart SONY's apparent dedication to quality is ignorant when no one here can prove one single negative claim. There is other quality blank DVD media, but do any of them care what you get from their blank recordable DVD media? People think for your selves. The gospel truth is your own personal experience. Not someones biased opinion of persuasion. (Notice, I put no specific blank media down to emphasize my point).

@Saugmon
Thanks for the info on the printers. I guess I need to do some investigating on that style of media before I jump in both feet first.
Where do you by your media at? I have always bought Verbatims at either Best Buy or Newegg. I like their media best. I found out that the silver Verbatims are for silk screening. I have never heard of printers doing that. It must be commercial type printers.

Those silver verbs can probably be thermal printables as well. I believe you can get a thermal printer for around $70-$80 last time I looked at them. Probably cheaper now? Just search for thermal printers.
I don't do a whole lot of full hub printables. Usually I get the hitachi made Maxell +8x full hubs at wal-mart. I'm waiting for Office Depot to have their buy 1 get 1 free of maxell sale. This week OD has a heck of a sale on their verbatim 16x.Spindles of 50 for under $14
I also really like the verbatim +8x in the full hub printable. The plus format is more expensive than the dash full hubs for reasons unknown when buying on internet stores like meritline/rima/americal/and supermediastore.com.
Staples have the sony 8x on sale this week. Lots of Yuden000-T02 on the japanese spindles of 50 in the plus 8x. Best buy also has them a buck cheaper. Office depot 8x speed media is also very good. These are made by ritek.
As you can see, I buy locally on sale media. All under 35 cents each when on sale, with the exception being printable media. There is some very good quality media out there on the fuji/sony/maxell/verbatim.Look for made in japan on those labels, with the exception of verbatim.Lots of tys/hitachi/and the quality metal azo dye of verbatim among them.

Go to OfficeMax. They will price match the OfficeDepot Verbatim price. I work there and although I would prefer you to go to Depot and have them take the hit on selling stuff below margin, we'll take your business anyday!
