							Quote:Can it not? From http://support.ap.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/p53101/en/intro.htm:and PHILIPS DVD+RW SDVD6004 can write to a DVD+R ?

Quote:In any event, I've burned DVD+Rs in the past with this drive....Philips DVD+RW is a Writable DVD drive. The SDVD6004 can write not only on CD-R and CD-RW but also DVD+RW and DVD+R discs. It has six functions in one drive: CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD+RW and DVD+R. A DVD+RW and DVD+R disc written by the SDVD6004 can be read and played by most older DVD-ROMs and DVD players in the field.

About the memory....I shut all programs down and monitored taskmanager while burning - the only thing taking up any memory was system idle process. No clue why the log showed so little free. Anything it could be? Any more info I could give to help?

 Many thanks...

Quote:Firmware seems to be up to date, but I doubt it's the latest -- rpc forum doesn't have any updates since April 2004, here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1681 So, I think you should check with Ricoh or Philips for any latest available firmware.Recorder: <PHILIPS DVD+RW SDVD6004> Version: 1.06

Quote:With only 13MB left, you're in a super tough situation here. My usual recommendation is to upgrade/add another 512MB to boost up your CPU. To free up more memory, try this: go to START, RUN and type msconfig, click on STARTUP and disable any unnecessary startup/running programs. Another way is "ctrl+alt+del" and click on Processes, then "End Process" on any programs/applications that you don't really needed in prior to burning.Free physical memory: 13MB (13516kB)

Dell support says it writes DVD's at 2X.
The Nero log says it's writing at 2.4X.
I presume that because the drive does not recognize the media, Nero is deciding that 2.4X is ok.
Are 2X and 2.4X considered to be the same?

							Thanks for the thoughts....
Seems my problem is A) bad support for my burner (last firmware update is almost 2 years old) and B) crap media - although I've burned 3/3 discs in another burner with no problems. Is my burner just incompatible with these discs? Anything I can do? I'd be happy even if I was turning out 50% coasters, but these discs won't even start to burn....

Quote:- firmware is up to date - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1681 however it was last updated in Apr 2004, so the firmware is not equipped to recognise all newer media, certainly not the media you're trying to use at the moment.Recorder: <PHILIPS DVD+RW SDVD6004> Version: 1.06

Quote:- the burner can't recognise that disc properly, here's an example (not the best example as it's CMC discs which are landfill but it's an example) of what it should look like -Recorder: PHILIPS DVD+RW SDVD6004, Media type: DVD+R

Quote:- ie when the firmware is up to date you will see a 3line paragraph such as in my example. So basically your firmware appears to have been left behind by the manufacturer, which happens sometimes when new drives are producedRecorder: DVDRW IDE1004, Media type: DVD-R
