Obtained downloaded AVI file. It seems to have been ripped from a DVD.
Plays ok in the computer using any player.
However when trying to convert to mpeg or any other format, using "WinAVI Video Converter" or "WinMPG Video Convert" for example, the converted file does not play correctly: it just appears the first frame all the time while the sound is ok. This happens using any player.

Any suggestion as how to convert the file correctly or how to get it played right?

Thanks for help.

There might be some sort of Header Corruoption in your AVI file which is Causeing it to not encode Correctly...Media Players can usually handle these errors better than encoders....

Maybe Try Running the AVI file through a Tool like "DivFix" or "All Media Fixer" or some other program for repairing Video files and see if that helps....

You can also see if "Virtual-Dub" can read the File properly (it will also tell you if there is Header Corruption and can also scan the File for Corrpted frames) and if it can then you can Try Frameserveing the File to your Encoder useing Virtual-Dub....

Good Luck

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try and report.
But actually I have now a number of AVI files (about 5) with the same characteristic. I tend to believe that the problem is related to the copy protection. Maybe they were ripped without "unlocking" this feature.
Any suggestion if this is the case?

There wouldn"t be any Copy protection from the DVD because the DVD could not be Encoded to AVI format if it was Copy protected...

The Only Type of Protection you can Have in AVI files is a Type of DRM Protection and if this were the case it would ask you for a Password and User name when you tried to play the AVI file....

If Virtual-Dub can read the File then you can easilly Frameserve it to and encoder like TMPGEnc and encode it to Mpeg-2...

If V-Dub can Load it and you want to try Frameserveing it then let me Know and I"ll explain how to do it.....

Cheers

dear minion

I tried your suggestion - used divfix, VirtualDub and tmpgenc:

Tmpgenc: could not convert the files. The image preview "locks" in the first frame (in one case after about 120 frames).
Divfix: used "check error": none was reported. Clicked in "rebuild index" (which creates a new file) and then tried to use TMPGEnc, the same happening as described above.
virtual dub: the preview image "locks" in the first frame while the sound goes on. When pressing stop, preview image "jumps" to the frame at the moment it stopped.

Any clue? (i´m lost...)

Well If this is the Only file that behaves this way i would say that the file is Most likely corrupted... If all files behave this way then i would say there is some sort of codec Conflict or some other software problems.....

Once again thanks for the attention.

Well, it happens with some files (I have about 4 or 5 now)and not with others - the problem is that I am not able to find out a pattern so far...I m sure if I find a common characteristic for these files, then the answer will be at hand.
Will continue to research. Should I find the cause, I will post it.
