hi, i have a ps2 slim and i want to get something portable!
i want to get a PS3 but as it is not out yet i will get the portable psp.
i have seen people ask about the firmware? what is 1.50 or 2?

what type of disks does the psp use?

whats the maximum capacity memory card a psp can take?

how easy is it to run non-original games?

what are the best features about the psp u like and is most worth it for?

these questions will really help me. Hopefully someone can help me.

The firmware is for all intents and purposes the software that runs the psp. You can check this by going to Settings, system settings and the system information.

The psp uses UMD discs (Universal Media Disc)

Its not exactly a memory card its a memory stick and it acts like a hard drive for your psp, you can get up to 2GB I think, there is a 4GB battery pack thing too, you can do a search for that.

By non original games I'm assuming that you mean ISO's which you run off you mem. stick, in order to do this you need either FastLoader or UMD Emulator, google it they are easy enough to find and get info on.

As for best features it depends what you want to do with it and what firmware you are running. 1.5 can run a lot of homebrew and emulators as well as ISO's, 2.0 can rum some homebrew and emulators but not ISO's but can run encrypted games such as socom and GTA which will not run on 1.5. Also with 2.0 sony included aweb browser but there are homebrews for 1.5 that can do almost the same thing. 2.0 can also be downgraded to 1.5.

Anything higher than 2.0 can't be downgraded and I think with the newest firmware you get support for RSS feeds.

Hope this helps, good luck

Hi,

The psp uses the sony UMD discs that are more like cartridges with mini discs inside. I don't think you can make or burn your own yet.

You can buy a 4gb "Hard Drive" for the psp that includes a battery, however this is quite bulky. I have a 1gb Sony Pro Duo card that costs about £50 on ebay.

You can run .iso files as games. There are a whole load of fastloaders/UMD emulators etc. that will play these games on your psp. You must only download a game that you already have and want to back up otherwise it's illegal :) Search for psp on ebay and there are a whole load of people selling these games. Make sure you have all of them though, or maybe you can lose your original :p

For me, i love how the psp can tap into the internet! You need a wireless router to do this but since i already have one it was easy. I also like the fact that it can hold multimedia on the go and has decent battery life.

I think the PSP is great, only drawback that i can think of is needing to upgrade to version 2.0 for the official web browser and having to downgrade to 1.5 for no-original games.

Oh, almost forgot! The Firmware:

This is the software that is on the psp. The original ones had 1.0 but gradually they worled their way up to 2.5. If you have a 2.0 or below you can downgrade to 1.5. No-original games will ONLY play on the 1.5 firmware.

If you upgrade beyond 2.0 (2.5...etc.) then your screwed for now and can't play non-original games. You may be unlucky enough to buy a psp with the 2.5+ firmware on it and you won't be able to play non-original games for now...it's your luck for now!

Wow...that was quite a reply! I need to get out more :p

Hope ive helped :)

thanks alot guys, that really helped. i just realized its got a web browser, i didn't know that.

by the way is the web browser similiar to internet explorer/mozilla FireFox, as in can u still view the web pages such as yahoo???

or is it only the sony website???

and another thing, is it easy to upgrade and downgrade firmware?

is it availible free on the net? if it is i will search myself
how long does it take to upgrade or downgrade approximately?

does it matter how many times i upgrade or downgrade?

will it harm the psp if i upgrade and downgrade 6 times a day???

thanks alot for the previous help!!!

Yeah, you can browse yahoo. The browser can't display websites that use flash and you can't watch videos through it though.

Firmware updates are available from www.yourpsp.com

You can upgrade/downgrade as many times as you like, but there is a false downgrader out there that will break your psp. So be careful where you get your downgrader from.

The PSP uses UMDs, small discs in a plastic object. Holds max 1.8GB.

Memory STICK PRO DUOs range from 256MB to 2GB
Memory STICK DUOs range from 32MB to 128MB
That's all it'll take.

Piracy (or backups as we like to call it) is easy on FIRMWARE 1.50 ONLY. YOU CANNOT RUN HOMEBREW ON 2.00+. THAT INCLUDES LOADING ISO BACKUPS. HOWEVER THERE IS NO (official) WEB BROWSER IN 1.50. THE BROWSER IS ON 2.00+.

It can play music, photos, videos, games, 1.5 can play homebrew + backups, 2.5 has locationfree tv, 2.0 has official webbrowser. I love the homebrew. You can have simple free unofficial 4mb games, appz like media players and file managers, emulation like snes, gba, genesis, iso loading (backups)...

The webbrowser can go practically any site PROVIDED THAT YOU HAVE A WIRELESS ADSL ACCESS POINT OR ROUTER. Internet does not come from air.
Thw official one's for n00bs who like it easy. The homebrew browsers are harder to use.

LIKE I SAID, NO OFF. BROWSER ON 1.5
NO HOMEBREW ON 2.0+.

BTW Homebrew is unofficial home-made appz and games. $0ny discourages this coz they are fagz and they want to make money from you but homebrew is free so they're pissed.

You can upgrade system software firmware veersions. 1.5 for t3h uber1337, 2.0+ for those who like it easy (but don't want backups, programs, emulation...)

I was told to change my sig so I did this.

Just call it firmware. If it's a corporate company i.e. GAME etc. they probably won't know what the heck you are on about anyway since people who work there are thick :p (joke)

When i bought my psp I phoned first to check if they had stock. I asked over the phone what firmware the psp's they had were and i got ,"I have no idea mate".

However, the letter next to the barcode will tell you.

Location - free tv requires a sony base station and means you can watch tv on your psp! However you require broadband, router (access point) AND the sony bases tation. It doesnt work or isnt on sale in some areas.

I don't know where the tv works about but you need the sony base station.

To run an iso you just copy it into the memory stick, it can't be burned as the psp doesnt play normal dvd's and a UMD burner doesnt exist.

you can't just use any old wireless router for LocationFree (PSP uses any router for internet, but not LF)
you need a $1000 LocationFree router, only sold by $0ny Japan. (AUD)

To tell:
On the box next to the barcode there is a number (region for movies) and a letter (A, B, C...). A is 1.5. B is 1.52. C is 2.0. Don't worry, 2.0 can downgrade to 1.5. if you get 1.52 upgrade to 2.00 and then downgrade. NO downgrading above 2.00+.

Ripping ISOs: shove 'em up the memory stick. Watch as you memory stick moans with delight that you learnt to break the law by piracy. BTW ISO loading only on v1.5

I was told to change my sig so I did this.

You can upgrade/downgrade as many times as you like.

You can put as many iso's as you can fit on your card, the loaders will display a list with all the iso's and you just pick the one you want to play. Upgrading/downgrading once downloaded will depend on ur usb port/your computer. It only takes a few mintues for me with usb 2.0

By the way, before i ask my next question i would like to thank:
"Leftear" , "libenja" and especially "steve 191" for helping me out so much. these questions that u guys have answered for me really helped. there is alot of bullsh*t out there on the net and made up stuff. and u lot have told me the answers nice and quickly.

Now i have decided to buy the PSP for sure. i am saving up and should have enough by beginning of january. i am going on holiday and therefore would like to buy it as soon as i come back.

so my other question is does anybody know where to get a really good deal PSP?
On ebay i can get a PSP from japan (english version) 2.0 for £140 and its the value pack

i would also like to get a 2GB memory stick to store my games on. i alreay have a 512mb but it think it is tooo small.

any links or names of websites would be great. i mean the best DEAL EVER would obviously be to get a psp value pack with 2gb memory for £200.

I would appreciate if u could help more and another thing i forgot to ask, does the psp have internal memory??? like at least 8mb???

HI all. Just picked up my PSP GigaPack at Walmart in New Hampshire, United States. I know i read that If my box says letter F then it is confirmed that it is a 2.0 and I am good to downgrade and do whatever it is that I want. However, I only seen the box and the letter F. I did not get to open it since it is a gift and have to wait untill x-mas eve to get it. Can someone please ease my nerves and tell me if this is true? That a Letter F on the box under the 120v sign is a gurenteed version 2.0. Thanks All for your time.

hhhmmm...good deals for the psp

Where i live in Scotland the psp's were becoming extremely scarce so i just bought the value pack at my local gamestation for £180. That way i didn't have to worry about getting scammed or getting a JAP one.

However i bought my 1gb Sony magicgate card on ebay for £49 + £5 p+p. I could get cards for around £50 including p+p but this one came with 5 year warranty and so does the 2gb ones bought from here.

Most people selling these cards on ebay are selling the japanese cards and that's the one i got but it works great!

The deal you mentioned for the value pack at £140 sounds good. If the seller has good feedback, located in uk and has assured you it is a v2.0 English version then go for it.

The guy i bought my card from also sells 2gb Sony ones. I got my card the day after purchase! I was amazed so i highly recommend them, here's there link :

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Digital-Source_W0QQssPageNameZviQ3asibQ3...

So if all goes well you should get your psp for £140 and, if you decide to buy from this seller, a 2gb card for about £95 approx. so £235...considering my psp and 1GB card was £235!

Good luck!

Changing the language isn't a problem, it's just like UK ones. It asks you when you first turn your psp on what langugage you would like it in and you can just choose English.

Hope to hear of you gettinf your psp and card soon!

well, i was expected to get my psp by apprimxately 20th jan, when i come back from holiday but i cant wait.

so i have just decided to buy one today. my friend is a experienced ebayer and wants me to get the listing checked out by him just too maake sure it is no scam!

otherwise i will get in on the next day delivery, hopefully by monday morning!!! or tuesday the latest!!!

---------
i am delaying to buy my card yet, i will purchase it when i come back later. there are lots on ebay for about £70 but the only bad thing is you have to wait 2-3 weeks.

So now i am going to buy a usb cable, buy a DVD with about 5-10 iso's on ebay for about £3.

I have heard people saying that u need fastloader on your memory card if you want to play iso games.

thats all fine but they also said i need a original UMD disk such as a demo, original game etc. Is this true???

thanks,

I have Fastloader 0.7, UMD emulator 0.8 and Devhook on my psp.

Devhook can run some games (fifa 06 etc.) and doesn't need a UMD at all.

However Fastloader and UMD emulator can run more games and they require a UMD. If you are buying a "value pack" it will come with a demo UMD and you can use that.

i wont get a demo disk. i will buy the psp magazine which always has psp demo's in it!!!

so should i just put all the loaders: fastloader, devhook etc at once??? will they conflict with each other. if not than that means wider game compatibility!

Exactly!

Get as many loaders as you can on there, they don't conflict!
