I've recently purchased a BenQ 1640 drive and it comes with a nice set of DVD utilities (that only work with BenQ drives) but I'm having a problem with the program called QScan which checks the quality of your media (non distructively) before you burn on it. I'm wondering if there is any other software tool out there that does something similar in a non-distructive manner. Thanks for your help.

The QSuite 'Test Write' utility works well .. It just requires a little tweaking.

First, make sure that you have the latest firmware .. BSNB
Second, make sure that you have QSuite v2.1
You also need to check the 'enable' (the default is disable) box and click on 'set'
You will need to use a program such as DVD Decrypter on Nero to actually perform the test write after you have enabled it.

When you are done with the test write, make sure that you refresh your system info (press F5)

you chose a great burner, good luck with it

Hi, Yes, I do have the latest firmware and also V2.1 of the tool. I haven't used the Test Write tool yet, but I do have DVD Decrypter so I can try what you've suggested, however, will Decrypter "simulate" writing or will it actually do a burn?

To CatFreak, I tried what you suggested, but when I start Decrypter with Test checked, I get a message that the current media doesn't support the test write feature, and that data WILL be written, so I cancelled the action. Did I do something wrong? Other suggestions?

You can only do a test write on media that is unknown to the burner's firmware or Solid Burn files ...

The following is a quote from BenQ ..
Quote:
Because of defined DVD+R/+RW/+R DL technical spec, current DVD burning software does not support simulation writing of these media.
I suppose that when new media becomes available, you'll be able to test write with it until the firmware is updated to include it ...

I saw that, but when you gave me the instructions, I thought you knew something I didn't know. Anyway, just for the heck of it, I just tried the Qscan tool again (full option) and this time it worked OK. No system hang. I guess I just have some type of intermittent problem. Maybe I'll hear from BenQ support at some point and I'll go from there. Thanks anyway for your help.

I have benq 1640 dvd burner (OEM)

did any one enable overspeed writing in QSuite and burn dvd? how was the outcome?

I did it. But, the dvd media was not actually burned. It was still blank even clone dvd indicates 'successful completion'. And I have to reinstall BSOB firm ware to fix it.

I ordered 16X ridata DVD+R. Do I have to enable the overspeed writing to achieve the 16x writting?

No. The 1640 will burn a DVD R at 16X without any changes to the burner.

Overspeed is used to burn a 4X or 8X DVD media at higher speeds.

A 16x burner won't write at 16x until you reach the outer edge of the disc ... ...

Explaination follows .......

If you compare the very inner track and the very outer track of a disc, you can understand that more information can be recorded in the very outer track, assuming the physical size of the data is similar from inner to outer

In fact, about 2.5 times more information can be recorded in the very outer track when compared to the innermost tracks. Then, assuming the rotation speed of the disc is the same for every track, you can record information 2.5 times faster in the very outer track than in the very inner track.

Since 16X writers rotate discs at constant speed, inner tracks are recorded at around 6X speed and only outer area tracks are recorded at 16X speed.

Consequently, a flat disc shape is very important to attain stable 16X recording at the outer disc edge. By the way, from a disc manufacturing viewpoint, it is more difficult to maintain a flat disc at the outer edge.
