I posted last week that I was having a receiving an error message when I attempt to back-up a few of my movies. I updated my firmware, but the newest update, for a GWA4040B, will not work for me. I don't believe it has been released in English yet, b/c I'm getting some funky fonts.
I successfully updated from the A112 to A113, but it I get a message that says it can't find a drive when I try to update to A114, even when I attempt to update in safe mode.
Would all of you "in the know" agree that firmware is my problem or could I try something else? or do you have a solution to updating to A114? Any help would be great appreciated.
The following is my log:

That's the thing, I'm using Verbatim and Verbatim DataLife DVD-R discs that have worked properly before. I have wasted about 15 of them lately with only one successful burn. I updated my firmware with A113 just fine, but I can't seem to get A114 to update.
Thanks for linking that article about my drive. I paid a lot of money for this Vaio so that makes me mad. I paid extra for supposedly "top notch" equipment.

What type of drive would you recommend?

My next one is going to be a BenQ DW 1640 or DQ60. I like the Plextor 716A as well, but don't want to spend that much money on a drive.
The Benq can be had for under $50.00. Top notch. You can read reviews here:

Thanks so much for your help. If I do decide to purchase one, I'll take your advice. This might be asking too much, but in your opinion, do you think my drive has just played out? Also, how hard are they to install. I can follow instructions and have installed memory before, so, I'm thinking not very hard.

Okay, I successfully burned a cd, so I'm thinking it's the firmware, not the burner. I'll keep trying the A114 update unless you guys can think of anything else to do. Regardless, thanks for your help.
