I've just been archiving all my old VHS Videos onto DVD and they have fitted onto just 18 DVD+RW disks. But sometimes I want to make a copy (not for backup - I can already do that with Roxio software) but a copy to give to a friend that only contains the one or two Titles from a mixture of Titles onto a blank DVD+RW or -R/+R disk.

Would software like DVD Decriptor do this job?
I should mention that I have Windows XP Home edition and only one DVD Rom Writer drive so it's always got to be a 2-stage process or possibly 3-stage.

I've not yet found any software that will let me select just one or two Titles from the source disk and write it/them to hard drive - then write those files onto a blank. I'm never sure which are the files that have to be sent to the blank .vob or .dvd etc nor what it needs to be a playable DVD finished product.

I tried "1 Click DVD" yesterday and it wouldn't run without reducing fonts to 96dpi on the desktop and then it tried to wipe the source-disk so I aborted and abandoned that one.

I'd be grateful for some pointers here please.
Thanks

As long as your discs are in DVD Video format then you should be able to use Shrink in reathor mode.
Use the edit start/end feature to crop the sections you want and then make a compilation.
For details on what I'm talking about see these guides....

DVDShrink in reauthor mode would allow you to drag the selected titles for a new compilation.

Get it free at this site. Guides are available as well.

Thanks a million for that information.
I'm not absolutely sure if my machine is making the DVD initially as the "DVD Video format" you mention. What I've just done is buy a new "TAPE-to-DVD" Recorder from a Korean manufacturer beginning with D ! and it seems to do a very good job. But - I have noticed that the machine only seems to make .VOB files but I could be wrong on that. The disks it makes will play on my latest XP computer and in modern DVD players but not on my older XP Home edition which I've had for about 18 months now. This is another matter and probably is something to do with the older DVD Rom drive or codecs or something.

What a bonus to have the software available free as well. Thanks for that tip and those links.

I've just printed out a bunch of instructional pages to get used to the program operation, before I fetch a copy and start using it.
It all looks very straight forward to me. Should turn out to be just perfect for my fairly modest needs. I don't need to compress or re-author any Movies, only stuff I've just compiled myself using my new TAPE-DVD Recorder.
So thanks again for the tips. I'd never have found that software without your advice.
Cheers

I think I spoke too soon. The DVDShrink doesn't recognise the disc as having the right file structure. I get error messages when it tries to read the source disc. Failed to read file D:\ The parameter is incorrect.

The only command that would open any of the files was Re-Author and that showed 2 titles Title 15 and Title 31 of 211mb each yet there are 15 titles on the disc.
The only command I could make work on it was showing an error that warned me Cannot retain Menu functionality when you re-author a menu. Instead all menu buttons will be converted to a video clip.
Back up in Full Disc mode.

I didn't fully understand what all that meant but it certainly wouldn't find the correct file-structure on any of my DVD+RW discs so I can only suppose that my Machine doesn't make proper DVDs that are recognised by DVDShrink software so I can't manipulate them with that.
Anyone got an alternative type of software that can re-author home-made DVDs ? This is very disappointing since I had high hopes for this software, it looked very good.

I've solved the problem.
The reason for the failed file structure was because DVD Shrink didn't read anything usable from a DVD+RW but it does read usable data from a +R or -R disc.

Clearly the DVD RW format is not "closed" in the same way with a proper DVD file structure as an R (closes permanently no further record possible)would be. The DVD Re-Recordable RW seem to only close by Locking the disk and so they're not quite the same as a permanent one.

All I have to do now is copy the full DVD+RW onto an R disc and then Re-Author that one to any media I choose.

It is a bit wasteful but what the heck, it makes a full backup to keep and the discs are cheap enough now. DVD Shrink now rocks !

Glad it all worked out.
Where'd you get the vhs to dvd machine? Sounds like a worthwhile puchase for my massive vhs collection.

Well I don't know if I'm permitted to make what amounts to an advertising thing here but I'll disguise it as best I can.
The machine was purchased mail-order from good old Amaz*n.co.uk who did the best price on the Da*w*o DF 8150P
It was recommended to me by someone who said go and look at the reviews. They were all favourable. The ease of use is what caught my eye. No fiddling about with trying to connect my old VHS Vcr to it via scart as it only needed plugging into my system with the existing scart leads. I could then chuck away my old VCR. The new machine has a slot for the VHS Tape and a tray for the blank DVD disks. You push the Vid cassette into it and you select the quality/speed of the recording SLP SP EP etc and press REC and off it goes.

If you come to need to pause the tape and leave out a section (Editing in other words) you pause the tape - fast forward to the next bit you want and then press RESUME and it carries on where it left off recording to the DVD+R or +RW in the drive. Taped material is enhanced because the resultant recording seems to clean up "noise" and boost colour and brightness, plus sharpens it up generally and seems to make it much improved on the faded and jaded original.

You're left with separate Titles on the DVD for each separate recording you started. But pauses within one title are kept within that Title so it is uninterrupted playback. You have the usual Thumbnail photo menu to navigate to each Title on the finished product. Fast search up to 32x speed. It can timer record off- air from Analogue or Digital signal - just like your normal VCR. AV2 tuned itself to my Satellite dish output and to whatever channel is selected on my Pace Digibox.
You can set chapter markers from 5 minute to any other time setting I have mine set to 15 minute intervals for quick skipping.

It's everything they said it would do plus more. All for UK Pounds 170. In USA dollars that's about 203. It's neat and very easy to use. I won't be recording anything to Tape any more. Oh that reminds me it also will dub from DVD disk to tape should you need to copy something onto that format for the sluggards of this world who are going to be swearing by the old fashioned Video Tape medium for the next decade - but then can you believe that in the UK there are still thousands of people who still only have Black and White TV.
Soon we'll be having a man walking in front of our cars waving a red flag!
I have no connection with the company that makes them. I'm just a retired person who likes new technology. This turned out to be a good purchase.
Cheers
