Hi folks, first post. I've been reviewing this site for a while now and finally have come for much needed advice. I have been running DVDshrink with DVDdecrypter to backup and i have found that on some movies when i begin the encoding process (i cant remember if this is specific to reauthoring of full disk) it will progress as usual, but when i near (or at) the end of the process it will start over and begin encoding again. I search my files on the computer and it shows no record of having a completed .iso file on the HD. ????. So, on some, not all, movies it takes me double the time!! ARggggghhh! WTF?

P.s. loved the 3pg. battle over burning @ 4x vs. 6x. LOL!!

AMD 64 4000+ SanDiego, 2Gig DualChannel OCZ Platinum DDR, 2-74Gig WDRaptors 10,000rpm in RAID0 (oh yeah!), Plexor 716al, 520w OCZ psu, Radeaon AX850XT gpu. Massive ThermalTake Kandalf case w/ 6-120mmFans

For movies that require compression DVDShrink will go through a long analyzation process and then go throught the encoding. I think this is what is happening.

Normal.

CRAP!! why didn't i realize that. And here i am thinkin i can avoid the title of total Newb (I guess it's there for a reason, huh) and lo and behold. . . THankx.
BTW - i've unknowingly purchased a 100pk of memorex DVD+R 16x( i know, i know (now)). Are they total crap? and one more thing. Should i supplement my setup with another drive, perhaps just DVD-rom?? If so, which make, model? My Plexie seems to do fine alone, but i wouldn't mind eliminating ripping isos to the HD

Regarding the media, just make sure that you burn it at 4x and set your target size to 4300 and you should be okay - er, you may get some coasters but I would think most will be okay.

Regarding a ROM drive, many recommend it. I do not have one, only my lg.

Someday maybe I will do it, but not before christmas anyway.

You plex is a real good drive, so you should be okay.

hey wait a minute! I've made 2 post previously about this very subject. DVDShrink does do the ENCODING step 2x sometimes. After my 1st post someone said the same thing about analysing/decoding and I half believed it. A couple weeks later I watched as 2 different movies both did a double encoding.

The issue does exist but so far no answers as to why.

I have personally never had a double encode, so I don't know. I do have the quick analysis, deep analysis and encode.

Quick analysis takes anywhere from 15 secs to 1 1/2 minutes.

Deep analysis up to 25 minutes
Encoding up to 25 minutes

Never had a double encode though.

mkarson83---You said you wanted DVD-ROM to avoid the ISO burn to hard drive (hd)? Going to hd first ensures good rips and burning from hd ensures good burns too. Most of the members here swear by going to hd instead of "on the fly" and bypassing it. Its a critical part of the process.

I personally like to use my ROM drive to place the Movie in and use Shrink set to burn with Nero to my burner.
Shrink will shrink and rip to a folder on the HD, bypassing the need to pre-rip before shrinking. You still have the file left on your HD when done. You don?t need to rip first and it saves a step and time.
I only copy ?on the fly? when I make a copy-of-a-copy that don?t need any shrinking, etc.
With on the fly you still create a Temp file on your HD, used as a buffer, and if you don?t try to burn too fast, where you get buffer over-run, it works just fine.. Some times, if the disk you are trying to copy is hard to read, you still have the chance of over-run and the burn fails?

That is why I never do an on-the-fly copy of my Grand-kids copies. Too much Gummy Bear, Pea-nut Butter, scratches, Etc.

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading; The few who learn by observation;
The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves...
