Can anyone help?

Two things I recommend you change. 1. Stick to slow burn speed, around 4x, it cuts down errors. 2. Use your Memorex discs for coasters, they are probably the worst media to use.

When I use the 8X I burn at 2X speed. What is the best and cheapest to use with this NEC?

Almost any disc would be better than Memorex, stay away from any CMC discs. Verbatim is my choice only because I cannot get Taiyo Yudens. If you want quality then I recommend you use quality discs. Burn slow no matter which disc you use.

I've got a newer drive that I occasionally forget and burn at 8X. To date no problems, though the possibility for errors increase with burn speed. My philosophy is slow good at 4X, but I see nothing wrong with burning faster if the media and hardware will support it. Burn as fast as possible, but back off if problems arise.

With a 4X burner there's no fear of burning too fast. LOL 4X is the hardware limit. I had a Memorex-Pioneer 4X that did a great job until it finally wore out. Just throw in the media and no worry about setting speeds. So don't worry about too fast, you can't do it.

Sounds like a firmware issue. Try getting the download for the firmware again, if need be from a different source. All the error is saying is that the file you got is bad.

Some Verbatim is made by CMC, so that isn't a sure way of not getting CMC. Though CMC isn't a favorite of mine by a long shot, I don't think it's the culprit here. For the novice consumer, many of the name brands have some of their media made in Japan. So look for that on the container when possible. Ricoh and Ritek are a couple of more trustworthy manufacturers and the Taiwanese Sony isn't bad either.

even i've weaned off 4x, to 8x, but only on my LG 4163 as it does 8x (mostly) a breeze. My 4167B can't/won't do 8x and as i'm a 4x freak anyway i leave it at 4x. On this laptop's flimsy (aren't they all LOL) TDK burner i did a couple burns at 8x which were fine but i stick to 4x now on the laptop.

as to media i only use 'Verbatim TY' at the moment (and for a while to come as i have about 1400 in stock at the moment)

Is it okay to use Sony-TY, TDK-TY, Maxell-TY, Panasonic-TY, Samsung-TY, Fuji-TY, TY-TY, or one of the other TYs? LOL

Must be something in the advertising. I'm often amazed that a consumer can buy the same media at lower cost by just purchasing it in a separate brand; same manufacturer, same media, just a different brand.

Verbs are usually high priced in the States. There is some lower cost merchandise in the brand. Much of that is CMC and other Taiwan manufacturers. However, some of the less expensive Verbatim I've purchased in the past was Ricoh. However, at the time, CMC wasn't making the +R media for the brand (I bought the +R). The DataLife Plus and Made in Japan are things to look for with Verbatim. The Mitsubishi are good as well and they make media for some of the same brands as TY; Verbatim, Sony, and Fuji are brands that sell both TY and MCC as the "Made in Japan" offerings. Most of what I've gotten has been TY though.

TY, MCC, and Ricoh are 3 manufacturers I like that sell under multiple brands. Interesting is that they account for a large market share of the quality brand name media being made. For the in house media, the Taiwanese Sony is one I've found to be a quality product. So, If they're out of the others, I'm not against picking up a container of the Taiwanese Sonys.

There's so much hidden behind brands, the newbie consumer can get lost to the point he isn't really aware of what he's getting.
