Okay...I have been reading and reading through alot of the threads concerning Dvdshrink and Nero. Originally I had DVD Shrink 3.1.7 and Nero 6 ultra installed and everything was working great. I started to have a problem with playback after burning Unleashed...that was when my problem started. My devise is an external HP dvd movie writer dc5000 and the disks I use are Sony DVD+R. I had the better luck with those over magnavox. I asked a buddy andhe said I needed to upgrade to dvdshrink 3.2.15 I believe thats what it was...I downloaded it from here (-;...well I got the same results with that. So I uninstalled it and it wiped out my 3.1.7 with it. Now, all of the reading I have been doing is telling me that DVD shrink is not what burns the movie...am I correct or wrong? I am having a hard time understanding how Nero actually does the burning and if I have all my settings correct or not. I have thought about upgradeing to Nero 7, but read alot of negative reviews about it. Is this 3.2.15 a good program, or do I need something else. I figure I am game for just about anything right now since I feel my writer is now a very expensive paperwieght. Then I wonder if I have bad disks, I am lost. Can you help a new guy out? Go easy on me as my computer terminology and lingo suck. Thanks in advance!

DVDShrink is excellent. I use it almost every time I back up a movie. That along with DVDdecrypter and you are well on the way to making excellent backups.

Check out the specific guide in my signature for DVDShrink and DVDdecrypter and follow them step by step and you will not have any problems.

You can get the latest DVDdecrytper here: http://mrbass.org/dvdrip/

And the latest DVDShrink here: http://mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

The only other thing that you might want to consider is a encryption breaker such as DVD43 or DVDFab decrypter (both free) or AnyDVD (retail with a 21 day free trial, This is the one I recommend).

Keep the Nero too as lots of folk swear by Nero.

Hey thanks for the info. I just did a search for Nero on my computer and opened up Nero burning ROM...once I did that I got the following message: "Nero - Burning Rom has a known compatibility issue with this version of Windows. For an update that is compatible with this version of Windows, contact Ahead Software."

could this be a problem? I have XP.

What version of Nero is it? The current version of 6 is 6.6.0.18

Nero isn't known to cause any conflicts with XP that I've heard.

Uh...I wished I could tell you exactly....the disk I was given from a friend wrote Nero 6 ultra....thats all it says. Would it be wise for me to find Nero 6.6.0.18, or just stick with what I have?

hello dale nice to see you here! Nero doesn't have any problems with xp except one, Nero 6 and above do not work correctly with service pack 1, if you have not upgraded you should from window's update, I had the same problem at one time and no what you are feeling.

The one very unique and annoying thing about any version of Nero is that it will give you 100's of excuses or blame another software - I hate Microsoft more than the next guy - when the simple truth is that you basically have to delete EVERY SINGLE Nero program before you install a new version. I've had more rants with them via e-mail going back to Nero 2.0?? and aside from one guy who confided that they purposely make their software to be non-compatible with other versions as an attempt to stem piracy, they're no fun to deal with. DVD Shrink, DVD Santa, DVD Decryptor, DVD XCopy, Magic DVD, etc., etc. use system files or namely the "default" program to do the actual burning & like all software, Nero is very territorial & has become your "default" burning program. Your best bet is to:
1) - make sure you have the Nero installation program that you want on your system in a separate folder
2) - uninstall ALL Nero programs
3) - in Windows Explore, physically remove all the program files not deleted by the uninstallation
4) - reboot your PC & delete any files that couldn't be deleted without reboot
5) - reboot again, if necessary
6) - install Nero whatever?
7) - enjoy burning again!!

I have Nero 6.6 Reloaded with all the upgrades & XP Service Pack 1 - SP 2, the IT Version lasted less than 5 minutes on my PC after installation. I'd rather send Uncle Billie a weekly update of what files I purloined from the web than have his 220Megs waste of time & space do it for me - I like the "personal touch". At last count I had burned 120DVD's & 500+ CD's with Nero 6.6 & XP SP 1.

Okay....wow thats alot to swallow at once...lol. I only have that one version of Nero installed on my computer. I am trying a few different things now.

DVD Decrypter
I am reading throught the guide I found on here under the guides section for this program. It tells me that the movie that I am trying to rip cannot be any bigger than 4,718,592,000 bytes. I put in Mr. & Mrs. Smith and it is saying it is 7,930,300,416 bytes. Way to big huh? Is there anyway to get rid of some things that I do NOT need on the disk in order to get the size down?

I tell ya, my brain hurts from trying to figure all of this stuff out.

The easiest way to think about your PC is that EVERY job or process has a DEFAULT way of doing things. Whatever program you install as the DEFAULT, dictates how the SYSTEM will handle the job, regardless of what software you THINK you are using. You've likely heard or seen the term, "shared dll's" - driver files used by one or more applications - this is how Nero burns a DVD for you when you think that you are using Shrink DVD or whatever ( I have 15 different programs to copy, decrypt or whatever with DVD's, but whenever they burn a DVD, Nero - the system default is actually at work).
Whatever YOU HAVE TOLD XP TO BE YOUR DEFAULT PROGRAM FOR A SPECIFIC TASK will always be the program used even though it may not appear that way.

Theory #1 Bad blanks

How can you tell if you have bad blanks? I am beginning to think that could be the problem...maybe. I just did Mr.and Mrs. Smith with DVDShrink and it seemsto be fine. Then I did an older movie...Joe Somebody, and it glitched and froze...(pulls what little hair I have left in my head out)

Theory #2 Dirty dvd writer

Maybe I should try to clean the lense on the inside with a disk cleaner and then try again?

Theory #3 Uninstall

Maybe uninstall my Nero program and all the other stuff I have and start over.

@Dale123

Here is a link that my buddy alkohol has posted the settings you should use for decrypter in.

Set yours up like this.

And here is a link for setting up shrink:

hello...
Well, I went through the tutorials in the links you provided. I set up everything exactly the same as it tells you. I tried Toy Story 10th anniversary edition and I get the dreaded "dirty disk" on my Sony DVD palyer. I am trying DVD Decrypter right now...but do not think I will get anywhere with it as the bytes are well over 7 million. I read through the guid for it over and over again, and still did not see what I am looking for, or maybe I do not understand. How do I make that smaller? I know with shrink it does it automatically. After I am done with decrypter will it give me the option to remove things in order for it to fit on a disk?
