I use to backup DVD's all the time on my desktop computer. Now I moved away from home and have a laptop that is equipped with a DVD burner but yet I cannot get it to work. I use Decrypter and DVD shrink and follow every guide perfectly and it even burns the disc I believe. But when I try to play it on my DVD players it never works. It usually just tries to load it and nothing happens or some say Disc Read Error. Any ideas?

What are the titles you are trying to burn? Are you running any additional software, such as AnyDVD, DVD43, DVDFab Decrypter?

DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are no longer being developed so they are no longer able to keep up with newer copy protection. While still able to backup 99% of the movies out there, they are irreplaceable. With the addition of any of the above mentioned progs, I doubt that there are any movies which can't be backed up.

Also, the movies I am trying to backup are The 40 Year old Virgin, The Bad News Bears and Dukes of Hazzards. I use Decrypter to rip it, works fine, DVD Shrink plus Decrypter to burn it and it says its successful.

What brand of blank are you using and at what speed are you trying to burn. Also set target size in DVD Shrink to 4300, this will prevent you from burning too close to the edge of the disc.

I was using Sony but I switched to Maxell and both won't work. I also switched to 4300 to avoid skips at the end of the film.

Sony and Maxell's are both good brands if made in Japan. Can you get us the MID code? Are you ripping with DVD Decrypter in file mode?

Are you running any other programs while you are burning the disc???
Also you might want to turn off your anti-virus and spyware programs cause you can get a burn complete and have skips or freezing frame from that.

I have officially tried everything and I am completely baffled now.

I tried using DVD Shrink and Decrypter and it worked for a couple DVD's but now has not worked for the last two months.

I tried using Any DVD and DVDClone aswell as Decrypter and it wouldn't work I have tried everything.

It is not like the burner isnt working, it is burning the DVD's and saying that everything is successful but the DVD's will not play! I do not understand this. I have tried the best blank DVD's and the worst and it has not made a difference.

I am now stuck with about 4 .ISO files on my computer. Will I be able to burn these to DVD's when I find a burner that works and also does anyone have any idea why my burner is doing this?

Burners head south all the time. Some brands more than others, but none are immune to problems. Do you have access to an external DVD burner? If so, it will be an easy task to see if the internal burner is the problem.

The Japanese or generic Sony from Taiwan are both good, so I doubt you're having a media problem unless there's some firmware issues with the laptop drive.

4 ISO videos; are those just ripped with DVD Decrypter or did you set DVD Shrink to create a Disc Image? If just ripped, set Shrink to transcode to a disc image.

Note where the transcoded ISO is located.

I have to watch things like that, 2 hard drives with 2 partitions each. With a laptop and a smaller HDD, you are probably on Local Disk (C:), with the ISO file located to that drive.

That will eliminate Shrink from the equation (either it transcodes or not), then all you have to do is figure the burn problem. DVD Decrypter is a reliable burner. ImgBurn is the updated version of the DVD Decrypter burner software. The author of DVD Decrypter is supporting the burn software of the DVD Decrypter as a new app, ImgBurn. LUK is legally unable to support the decryption software, but he's actively supporting the burner software. It resets the paths from the Decrypter burning software to ImgBurn during the setup. Nero and CopyToDVD3 from VSO both burn ISO files, and they have trials. So, you can try some different burner apps.

Just let us know if Shrink transcodes one of the ripped ISO files to a Disc Image (ISO) on the hard drive that is ready to be burned. We can go from there. If Shrink works though, I'd suspect the burner. If you noticed, Shrink can create a DVD Files folder to the HDD as well.

Hard disk space could start becoming an issue. Not knowing the size of the HDD, it's hard to make a call. We haven't been given any of the specs on the PC or its system resources. All we know is that it's a laptop. A rule of thumb for most encoding software is to have double the size of the source DVD in free space on the HDD. In this case it sounds as though the DVD is already ripped to the HDD. To create an ISO Image file, there will have to be space for the temporary encoding files and the space to store the finished ISO image.

Do those source ISO files you have ripped to the HDD play properly with PowerDVD, WinDVD7, or a similar DVD player app? An easy check to see if the structure is correct.

Alright, Thanks for the Help...The Laptop size is not an issue I have plenty of room on my hard drive. It is a new Dell Inspiron and I have barely anything downloaded to it. The .ISO files that I have ripped on my computer I cannot tell if they can play or not because they are decrypter files and when I open them they automatically direct me to DVD Decrypter software.

Being in ISO format, you will need to load the ISO in an emulator such as DAEMON in order to play in a DVD player app. Nero has an emulator as well. Alcohol is another app that can handle ISOs. DAEMON is a freebie though. Once loaded in the emulator, the PC sees (or should see) the ISO as a DVD loaded in a drive. The PC assigns a drive designation for the emulator if you're not familiar with the process; so, you'll have another drive letter when you load the emulator software. Under File on the Shrink toolbar you can select "Open Disc Image" to open ISO files from the hard drive. An ISO doesn't have to be in an emulator to be opened in Shrink. Shrink can open the ISO in an emulator, in that scenario you would select open DVD and go to the emulator drive.

As for space being an issue, as I said, we have no way of knowing since there are no specs given on your equipment. Now we know you have a Dell Inspiron. You neglected to mention the hard disc size. They usually come with a 40 or 60GB HDD, depending on the model. Since most new movies are about 7GB, we'll use that as a rough figure. 28 GB of storage tied up in video. That leaves 12 to 32 GB (40 or 60GB?). If the smaller drive, it's already an issue. No way of knowing, you're being tight with the info.

I'm assuming from the last statement that you ripped the files from a DVD with DVD Decrypter. If the process stated it was successful, then the files are ready to be transcoded. If you have the HDD space, why don't you transcode one on the HDD as I suggested. You don't need any other software to do it and it eliminates Shrink as part of the problem.

The previous post was getting a bit long. The short of it is, you need to open Shrink, click File on the upper toolbar, select Open Disc Image and select one of the ripped ISO files to be transcoded. Then once you select Full Disc or do Re-author and go to Backup, you need to select the option I pointed out to transcode an ISO Disc Image to your hard drive. Once you have that, you use the emulator I mentioned to load the ISO. As I pointed out, your PC then sees the ISO as a DVD in a DVD drive. Use an app like PowerDVD to play the file. Don't use a multi format player like Windows Media Player, we want to see if it plays properly in DVD format. If it plays, then you can almost bet your problem is with the burner in some way. That's all that's left. To eliminate the software aspect, you can try the ImgBurn I mentioned or some of the trial software.

I don't know what Dell is shipping these days, but the PC I ordered a couple of years back included DVD player software. PowerDVD was part of the bundle then. Hopefully they included some DVD player software since you're equipped with a DVD burner. I've heard Dell has cut back on the media they're shipping, so it may be a purchase item now.
