hi,i know the basics of burning dvd's with nero, etc,but i have run into a problem that i'm not sure how to get around.I have successfully burned dvd files on my hd to disk with no probs, but i recently bought some 'less expensive'blank dvd-r disks(tdk) and for some reason i can't burn onto them,i tried burning the same project onto a dvd-rw disk beforehand and it was ok but when i tried with the tdk disks using nero i got error message(something like)could not perform start of disk at once, followed by burn failed at 2.4x
so basically i figure the media isnt compatible with either the nero burning rom or the recorder, can someone please help and let me know whether the problem is with the dvd recorder or nero and if there is any way around it,like maybe different burner etc etc
if you need more info please let me know the specifics
many thanks for your help

It sounds like your burner doesn't like the tdk's. Make sure your firmware is up to date - this may help your burner 'burn' them. Your best bet is to pick up some better media - like the ty's or verbatims.
Post your last Nero log (make sure you remove the serial #'s) and we can see if something else is going on also.

Not a prob! Here's where you Nero log will be.
Go to: c:program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory.log.
Each burn log is separated by this:
===== *** NeroAPI, History File *** =====
Just copy and paste the last one. Edit out the serial # - they begin w/ 1A.
The log will tell us your drive, firmware etc. Post that and we should be able to sort it out for you!

Turn your DMA on for this drive if you are using it to copy DVD's to a blank DVD, otherwise I recommend ripping to your hard drive first.
To turn on the DMA go here. http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm
Try turning of the disk at once feature, this may help you as well,,,

I would recommend updating your memory to at least 512 MB

Just passin through.
You should also update your Nero. You are way behind. Should be 6.6.0.18

Cheers.

Your firmware is also waaaaay out of date - this 'teaches' your drive different types of media and the burn speeds for them.
Here's a link to dl the latest firmware:
http://support.necsam.com/optical/downloads/flashfirmware/readme....
The first page has a step by step instructions - accept then download and flash your drive.

Than NEC burner should handle 4X or 8X TDK DVD-R (TTG01 or TTG02) without a problem, once firmware is updated. At work I have a 3 year old NEC 1300A that burns either of those disks at 4x.

thanks for your help everyone
binkie7,i have read the instructions to download the latest firmware but when i get to the page where the download should be there's nowhere to press for it,it shows this:

NEC DVD-ROM Firmware Flash Utility Download
Please note: Firmware updates for NEC DVD drives will generally only add new media information and will not solve issues in conjunction with some software packages.
If the firmware upgrade is not performed correctly or if the power supply is interrupted during the upgrade, the drive may be rendered unusable. The link is missing. Try reloading the page or just navigate to it again. Make sure you follow the directions carefully. That's why they make you click on an acknowledgement that you have read the directions and provide you with an option to print them out.

What's the brand of your pc? Or did you buy the drive directly? Firmware versions go in numberical/alpha order.

ok first of all binkie7,my pc is emachines 3230

right i have managed to access the download
i have followed the instructions and determined it is my 'master' drive, however it comes up with the error box 'target NEC ND-2510A is not found correctly' in a pop up box,as shown in one of the instruction display boxes, but it says verify the correct drive, but the dropdown box in the original bigger box,is greyed out so i cant access it,also in the box where it should say'target drive is not found' it says instead'SPTI ready'
i think ive followed the instructions well enough i just cant see a way to resolve this problem
please help

ive also updated my Nero to 6.6,so with a bit of luck if i can get round this problem,i might be back almost there
thanks lee

Those errors can mean it doesn't see the drive or the firmware doesn't match the model. I'm still thinking that nec is the oem. So instead of guiding you the wrong way let me see who i can call in.

cheers binkie7 and creaky
first of all,ive already updated my Nero to 6.6.0.18
ive tried burning onto the same disk and it never worked
i can confirm that the cd/dvd rw is built into and came with my pc,which is an emachines 3230.
the main prob i have is what i said in the other post about the error box when trying the firmware update,so basically thats what i need to sort out how to do.
on a side note,i can just bin these cheap disks, but will i eventually have to get the firmware updated anyway,if so i would if i can get it sorted now that will be great
it seems that verion 2.18 is the latest update for my drive,so with that, what could i be doing wrong in the firmware update for the message i posted earlier?
thanks lee

binkie7,yes,i disabled the slave drive if the slave drive being the other sub category within cd/dvd rom drives from the device manager called 'generic dvd rom scsi cdrom device'
i also found another item within the device manager which the instructions said would be in control panel and to uninstall called intel(r) 8280 1db ultra ATA storage controller-24b,but kept needing rebooting and reinstalled itself
another thing i found was when trying the download flash,i tried from a direct download from the page and tried from saving it to my desktop then proceeding and found in properties that the file was blocked as it came from another computer but i unblocked it and tried again with no luck, from my understanding it seems ive followed all the insructions and even tried with other drives enabled and disabled but every time i get the same error,in the flash box it says 'spti ready',in the window, but then the pop up box always appears with'target NEC ND-2510A is not found correctly'i tried to close the popup box down and the first box closes with it so i cant enter any details in the flash box for correct drive etc
some things are not meant to be and unfortunaltely for me this seems to be one of them.
oh well, thanks for you time and help binkie7

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. It seems the ata storage conroller is stopping you from udgrading your firmware. Check intel's site to see if there is any workaround.
